Mandela Barnes Exits Wisconsin Governor's Race, Cementing Francesca Hong's Lead
Former Wisconsin lieutenant governor Mandela Barnes dropped out of the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary yesterday, just before the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel broke a story about how he had abused his position "to have sexual encounters with young adult women." Once the presumed front-runner in the race, Barnes said yesterday in his exit announcement that "it's become very clear who our nominee is going to be": state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist who's been leading in the polls and racking up endorsements.
A "fifth consecutive Marquette University Law School poll" this week showed Hong in the lead, with 34 percent support ahead of Barnes' second-place showing with 16 percent. According to Politico, centrists are hoping Barnes' exit will boost third-place candidate David Crowley, who had a mere 7 percent support in that poll, to make a stronger showing. But Hong also made a pitch to Barnes fans. "To everyone who supported Mandela because you believe working people deserve a government that fights for them, I welcome you to our movement," she says.
Latest Tech Trend: Rogue AIs Hacking Random Companies
For the second time in two weeks, a US-made AI model has been reported to have broken into the computer systems of outside organizations. Anthropic disclosed the cyberattacks yesterday, nine days after rival company OpenAI disclosed a similar incident, the New York Times reports. Anthropic declined to identify the targets of the latest hack. In both cases, the AIs did not exploit "previously unknown vulnerabilities but rather relied on 'basic techniques' like weak passwords and malware to break into the targets' systems." It's enough to make you wonder if these bubbleicious companies see the headline-grabbing misbehavior of their software as free advertising for their cybersecurity products. They're certainly taking advantage of the publicity in their lobbying efforts to shape the Trump regime's AI policy.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that the State Department displayed a map of Africa created using OpenAI with every country mislabeled during a global AIDS conference in Brazil this week. "What an embarrassment," Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, responds. "This is what happens when the US Department of State fires career experts and tries to have AI conduct diplomacy."

Miller calls the allegations "false"; his ex's father, GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno, has not commented on his daughter's abuse claims. Both Miller and Moreno are allies of Donald Trump.

PARTING WORDS
"They haven't changed data. They haven't modified data. They haven't deleted data. They just have some data."
-- Pamela Smith, head of the election security organization Verified Voting, speaking to the Washington Post about White House claims that China "compromised" voter rolls in 15 states. Donald Trump claimed this month the data was "bought, stolen, or hacked," but state officials tell the Post that federal authorities never warned them about any such hack, and many states publish their voter rolls online, where anyone can freely access those public records.
