THE BIG NEWS

Madison Is the Latest Flashpoint for Racist Police Violence

Local authorities in Madison, Wisconsin yesterday identified the man executed by police in broad daylight and on video on the city streets this week. His name is Corey Ruiz. He was 38. Those who knew him remember him as a father who was enduring homelessness and struggling with his mental health. State authorities also opened a homicide investigation into the shooting, which immediately sparked protests reminiscent of the nationwide George Floyd movement that kicked off in Minnesota in 2020. Hundreds gathered for a vigil in Madison last night, demanding justice for Ruiz and accountability for the police officers who killed him.

NBC News reports that yesterday's police "news conference became heated, as Madison Police Chief John Patterson was interrupted by two protesters for about 20 minutes." The Cap Times reports that Ruiz's family has retained nationally prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump. Although only 7 percent of Madison's residents are Black, over half of the city's police use of force incidents were against Black people. "What's particularly egregious to me [about this case] is that this person seems to have been going into compliance at the time he was shot in the head," Ion Meyn, an associate professor of law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, tells the Cap Times.

Per the Wisconsin Examiner, State Rep. Francesca Hong, the democratic socialist in Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary, says "she is 'horrified and devastated' and that her heart 'goes out to his loved ones and everyone who witnessed this tragic event.' Hong said that all police footage of the shooting needs to be preserved and released, and that questions need to be asked of the police department as to why its officers could not de-escalate the situation."

Rest assured we'll keep an eye on this case, the protests, and the state investigation.

Trump Slaps Fresh Tariffs on 80 Countries

Global tariffs in the 10 percent range took effect in the United States this morning, after Donald Trump and his lackeys settled on the statutory excuse of "forced labor" to relaunch a mindless and damaging trade war that the Supreme Court has already ruled against. "It's not really about forced labor," Georgetown law scholar Peter Harrell tells the New York Times. Democratic Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts calls the justification "too convenient to be taken seriously," per HuffPost. "Forced labor is a real and pervasive problem in our supply chains and demands serious enforcement," Neal says. "It should never be cheapened into a pretext for a tariff policy built on dubious legal theories and personal grievances."

Republican operatives fear Trump's tariffs will hurt them in the midterm elections. "Everything that you do that’s not focused on affordability is not helpful," one anonymous close-to-the-White House source tells Politico. "When you announce new tariffs, it's not like, okay, well, let's see what they do. It's, 'Oh crap, those are the bad things.'"

India's Modi Tries to Mollify Youth Protesters

Far-right Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing some of the largest youth protests of his dictatorial reign, and he's handled it in his typical way: by having the police crack heads. Leading the protests are the Cockroach Janta Party, an ironically named youth movement enraged about cheating on entrance exams for government jobs, one of the country's only pathways to prosperity; as well as the All India Students’ Association and the Students’ Federation of India. The protests have been gaining steam in Delhi for nearly a month now.

Unusually, Modi yesterday made a show of responding, pledging to "set up fast-track courts to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved" in exam cheating. Cockroach leaders call the proposal insufficient. Also yesterday, prominent activist Sonam Wangchuck, ended his 26-day hunger strike over the exam scandal following "a long negotiation" with the government "and in view of possible violence in the country." The protests will continue.

SOME NUMBER

18

That's how many US servicemembers have been killed in Donald Trump's illegal war on Iran, according to a Pentagon website on Wednesday. Then yesterday, the New York Times reports, the number was revised down to 14. The Pentagon's acting press secretary, Joel Valdez, blamed "temporary data disruptions" for the change.

PARTING WORDS

"Just experienced my first air raid in Ukraine. ...

"I feel like such an asshole for minimizing the struggle of Ukrainians for the last 5 years. I often said I don't care. Looking back, that wasn't very nice of me to say. ...

"We have been so propagandized by Russia and we don't even realize it. Air sirens could very well be the future of America if we don't start demanding our lawmakers crack down on communism and multipolarity. We won't have Trump forever and the axis of evil is moving fast."

-- Unofficial national security adviser Laura Loomer, posting on social media this week about her visit to Ukraine, which was endorsed by her political patron Donald Trump. Loomer met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday and, she quipped, "even wore a suit." Loomer, a "proud Islamophobe," had previously called Ukraine a country of "Nazi apologists." Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of a Southeast Asian summit in Manila, but reported no progress on bringing the war to a close.
