Promises Kept: Mamdani's Rent Freeze Is Approved

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's pledge to "freeze the rent" in one of the world's most expensive cities was a core promise of his phenomenal campaign. Yesterday that pledge became a reality when the city's Rent Guidelines Board approved a rent freeze on one- and two-year leases for a million rent-stabilized apartments, comprising 40 percent of the city's housing stock, effective Oct. 1. The board's vote was 7-1, and it prompted cheers and tears of happiness from the tenants' rights activists who gathered for the occasion. "Organized tenants made history today," said New York State Tenant Bloc director Sumathy Kumar, per Gothamist. "This is the relief that working people across our city deserve," Mamdani said, per the Associated Press. Landlords will likely sue to block the decision, Politico reports. "This is sad," complained one anonymous landlord, who inherited her property. Is it though?

Newsom Fails to Get California Billionaire Tax Pulled from November Ballot

When the SEIU labor union and allies led a progressive proposal to levy a one-time 5 percent tax on California's billionaires, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom cast his lot with the billionaires. Newsom's regressive coalition, including cop unions and a doctor's association, hoped to bully "the dangerous wealth tax" off the ballot, warning that Silicon Valley oligarchs might follow Elon Musk's lead and flee the state if it passes. (Oh no.) But tax backers refused to back down, and yesterday the Secretary of State certified the proposal for the November ballot. "While a few morally bankrupt billionaires and their buddies in Sacramento want to see California’s hospitals close, and tax breaks for billionaires protected – I assure you, the vast majority of voters do not," Debru Carthan, a spokesperson for the Billionaire Tax Now Coalition, tells the Los Angeles Times. Silicon Valley Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna tells the Washington Post that "this is a moral test about whether the Democratic Party will be for the billionaire class and the donor class or whether we will be for the working class." Newsom picked his side, and his decision will be remembered when he eventually runs for president.
