THE BIG NEWS
Unaccountable Supreme Court Builds Armed Force
The ultraconservative unelected lawyers who rule over America for life are spending an increasingly astronomical amount of tax dollars on protecting themselves from the consequences of their unpopular and deadly rulings, according to Politico. They are throwing money at security, essentially building their own army by more than doubling the number of agents and officers assigned to protect them and the Supreme Court building. The spending is causing the Supreme Court’s budget to skyrocket; between 2022 and 2027, it increased 114 percent, from $98.3 million to $210.3 million. The court is pushing an aggressive recruitment campaign with slick videos of officers walking in slow-mo with assault rifles and attack dogs, with the goal of luring Americans into protecting the very people who are in the process of destroying their right to healthcare and more. Per Politico:
“Every detail has an armored vehicle. All nine of them, every justice, rides in an armored vehicle,” Special Agent Rob Smith of the court’s Dignitary Protection Unit said at an online recruiting session last year . “They’re about 8- to 10,000 pounds, depending on which model you’re driving. They do drive a little bit differently than your normal Yukon or Suburban SUV, so it can be a little bit challenging.”
The array of tasks Supreme Court Police are expected to perform has expanded. At one Federalist Society dinner that drew several justices to Union Station a few years ago, journalists escorted to a balcony high above the event were startled to see they were sharing it with a Supreme Court Police SWAT team camped out with assault rifles and scopes.
The high court’s police force also now includes a Protective Intelligence Unit to analyze threats against the justices, a K-9 unit, a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical team and more.
There are signs of strain from the sheer size of the high court’s security-focused hiring spree. The budget request for the coming fiscal year asks for five more administrative positions “to support significant growth within the Department.”
And with physical space at the 91-year-old Supreme Court building essentially capped, court officials are looking for room elsewhere, asking Congress for $2 million to set up an “off-site… regional command post” to coordinate protection for the justices’ homes. Budget documents also describe the planned remote base as “a redundant police operation center to maintain all vital security programs in case of disruption.”
At the court, evidence of the new focus on security is on display, but not obtrusive. There are more surveillance cameras and more doors secured with digital keypads, as opposed to just lock and key.
Cybersecurity is also being stepped up. The high court’s current budget request seeks a dozen more staffers to “defend against quickly evolving cyber threats.”
The fine print of another budget document revealed that the court undertook a “secure printing project” in 2023 or 2024. That was shortly after a Supreme Court investigation into the Dobbs leak reached an inconclusive result and urged adoption of “tracking mechanisms” for the court’s printers and copiers.
The court has also been keen to wean itself off of Marshals Service protection. The marshals willingly took on the assignment of guarding justices’ homes, but it shifted them away from their other core task: arresting criminals. In 2024, the marshals scaled back a major operation pursuing fugitives, conducting it in 10 cities instead of the 20 targeted the previous year, in part because of the burdens of guarding the justices.
This frankly infuriating news about nine people we didn’t elect comes after the rulings they handed down last week, which will very literally cause the unnecessary deaths of millions of people, as Corey wrote on Friday. The justices blessed Trump’s ethnic cleansing campaign by cancelling Protected Humanitarian Status for 1.3 million immigrants, who are in the country legally; ended the internationally guaranteed right to asylum; struck down Hawaii’s gun control law; and squashed cancer victims’ claims against poison-maker Monsanto. And now, after all that, after their deadly Dobbs decision, after sitting comfy in their lifetime jobs while the rest of us get laid off because of AI, they want to spend our taxes on protecting themselves.
MORE STORIES TO WATCH
More War? No More War?
News outlets referred throughout the weekend to a “test” of a “fragile ceasefire,” by which they mean that the US and Iran resumed bombing each other’s assets and allies. Then this morning, the US said they agreed to stop fighting, though as of 6:53 a.m., as I drink some coffee and update the newsletter, Iran had not confirmed that was the case.
According to the NYT and the AP, the “new hostilities” began Thursday when Iran fired on the Panamanian-flagged tanker Kiku, which was carrying “crude oil for the state-run energy company of Qatar, a key negotiator between Iran and the US.” The US responded by bombing Iran and striking its military’s “surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities and minelayer capabilities.” The US then said Iran drone-bombed another ship, though Iranian officials did not claim responsibility; Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp said it had bombed a US naval base in Bahrain and the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, two US allies. The Revolutionary Guard said US bases “will experience hell in these coming days,” according to NBC News. Meanwhile, Trump repeated his genocidal claim that unless Iran bends the knee, it “will no longer exist!”
Board of Peace Planning to Seize Property in Gaza “Free of Charge”
A draft resolution for the Trump-led and UN-backed “Board of Peace” suggests that members’ main priority in Palestine is crime. The resolution, a copy of which the Guardian obtained, grants legal immunity to all board members and allows them to seize public property for free. Per the Guardian:
The four-page resolution, labeled “sensitive but unclassified”, extends broad protections to every member of the Board of Peace and its administrative affiliate, the office of the high representative (OHR), as well as to the Palestinian technocrats, international military forces and nonresident contractors lined up to perform work in Gaza. It defines legal processes from which they would have immunity as “any arrest, detention or legal proceedings in the courts or other entities in Gaza.”
A seven-member “executive board” of some of the most craven characters in the Trump administration are the board’a leaders, including international land-grabbing slumlord Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Steve Witkoff, the real estate billionaire who is also Trump’s special envoy

That’s roughly how many local newspapers sued Sam Altman’s OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright theft, alleging the companies “systematically copied copyrighted reporting” to develop their odious large language artificial intelligence products, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, products nobody wants because they provide incorrect info and allegedly make or help users kill themselves, multiple other lawsuits claim.

Geidner will discuss the recent SCOTUS rulings.

“Suicidal empathy.” Lol ok Dave.

PARTING WORDS
“Everybody’s sick of you. Even the two Jews on this call are sick of you.”
– Trump, in a February call to Benjamin Netanyahu after Israel bombed Doha. Trump’s negotiators, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, were listening on the line. The quote is contained in the new book Regime Change, which the FT favorably reviewed this weekend; the review did not mention that the authors, NYT reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, kept secret crucial pieces of information, which the US public had a right to know when it happened, so they could save it for their book. For example, last April, the administration considered suspending habeas corpus rights for undocumented immigrants. But Haberman and Swan didn’t say anything about it until this month, more than a year later, when they used the info as a teaser to get people to the bookstore. It’s a good marketing strategy: the two sold 150,000 copies of Regime Change on its first day of sales last week, so many that publisher Simon & Schuster ordered another 150,000 copies to meet the demand. But me personally? I resent everything about this little event in American Letters, and while I want to read it, I’m certainly not going to spend a single cent to do so. A hardcover copy ranges from $24 to $34, depending on where you buy it; on the low end that’s $7.2 million extracted from our collective pockets. Personally, I think they had an obligation to report major news as it happened. So personally, I’ll get it from the library.
