THE BIG NEWS

Trump's Swamp Overfloweth

The Trump regime has never failed to supply painful visual metaphors for its many outrages and failures, from the portable McDonald's that follows him on overseas trips to sell out his own country to the televised gladiator fight on the White House lawn. The latest sorry spectacle to captivate the country is the swampification of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which Donald Trump promised to clean up and turn a pristine "American flag blue" – but which, since the completion its costly renovation this month, has turned a garish green with out-of-control algae blooms. Though few may now remember his 2016 campaign promise to "drain the swamp," the fascist dotard has delivered the garish opposite.

As the Washington Post reports, the slimy green pond has become Washington, DC's hottest tourist attraction. MAGA faithful are speculating that Deep State "bureaucrats" seeded the algae in the pool to sabotage Trump yet again, but some experts say the dark blue coating Trump had applied to the bottom of the pool is raising the water temperature, causing the algae to thrive. As HuffPost reports, that blue epoxy coating is already peeling off, with loose chunks floating to the water's surface.

As with everything Trump does, there's a corruption angle. The New York Times reports that Trump's friend, neighbor, and donor, John J. Cafaro – a "fantastic man" who looks like The Penguin in a toupee – was the beneficiary of a $1.7 million no-bid contract to "purify" the water in the reflecting pool. Cafaro, incidentally, pleaded guilty in 2001 to bribing the late Ohio Democratic Rep. James Traficant, Jr. Since 2016, Carafo has given more than $300,000 to Trump's political committees. Not a bad return on investment!

Meanwhile, the Post reports that the regime has pilfered $352 million from the Secret Service's training and recruitment budget to pay for Trump's White House ballroom boondoggle, which he repeatedly claimed would be entirely privately funded. Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley tells the Associated Press that the misspent funds are potentially illegal. "Trump has proven that he can't be trusted to follow the law," Merkley says. “He only cares about wasting taxpayer money on his vanity projects." That's unfair. He also cares about revenge.

Iran Wins: JD Vance Set to Take the Fall as Republicans Sour on Peace Deal

SOME NUMBER

49 percent

That's the share of American adults in a new Gallup survey who are "cost secure" in terms of health care, "meaning that they had access both to high-quality, affordable care and they had recently been able to afford the care and medicine they needed." As the Associated Press reports, the share of cost secure adults is down from a recent peak of 61 percent in 2022, when Joe Biden was President; the numbers have since then kept getting worse especially for younger adults, older adults and women.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the accused UnitedHealthcare executive assassin Luigi Mangione told a court that they were withdrawing a planned mental health defense.

PARTING WORDS

"He specifically said, 'It's your fault, and you deserve it.' So Donald Trump said it was my fault and I deserved for my son to be murdered."

-- Former Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene telling a podcast host this week about how her ally-turned-nemesis Donald Trump gloated over "credible" death threats against her family following her support for the release of the government's files on Trump's late pal, the elite sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Greene claims she has text messages proving that Trump approved of the death threats.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports that Trump has a new favorite line he deploys against the growing number of MAGA defectors in his own party: "I'm the president and you're not."
