Cockroach Victory: Protesters Win Most Major Demands
India’s youth-led protesters declared victory Saturday night after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government accepted many of their major demands, including the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation for families of students who died by suicide over the government’s educational exam failures, Drop Site News and the New York Times reported. Young people began the Cockroach Janta Party as an online parody of Modi’s Bharatiya Janta Party after India’s chief justice compared unemployed Gen Zers to “cockroaches.” Then they turned themselves into one of the “biggest displays of public dissent in recent years,” NBC News reported, including the 26-day hunger strike of activist Sonam Wangchuk, which further fueled protesters’ anger. Modi’s government could not suppress the movement as it spread from New Delhi to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai; cops shot them with tear gas, hit them with batons and stones, and in Bihar even fired at them with live rounds. Despite all that, “Cockroaches won. Democracy won!” CJP wrote on social media. “Remember, do not mess with cockroaches.”
As Corey told you last week, the CJP, the All India Students’ Association and the Students’ Federation of India have been protesting since June, infuriated by cheating on entrance exams for medical school and government jobs, “one of the country’s only pathways to prosperity.” Earlier in the year, authorities said the exams were compromised by a “cheating racket” spread on messaging app Telegram and that millions of students would have to take them again. The grueling, hours-long tests demand that students spend “years of near-total devotion” studying to pass; they responded to the crushing news with fury. On Friday, protesters flooded New Delhi “even as authorities shut 18 stations across the city’s metro network, disrupting a vital mode of transportation for its 23 million residents.”
In addition to Pradhan’s resignation, government officials said they would drop all police cases against protesters and pay compensation to the students who killed themselves over the exam leaks. The government did not promise to implement the reforms CJP wants for exams, only that officials will consider the proposals; the new education minister, Pralhad Joshi, is a member of Modi’s cabinet who has been associated with right-wing politics since he was a young man, according to Al Jazeera. So we have to watch carefully that the government fulfills promised changes and offers real reforms. And, of course, any government can always go back on its word. But I am including this as the big story so we can start the week with some initial good news from one of the front lines of our ongoing collective struggle against the powerful, connected, entrenched fascists who want us to work and die in silence. US, Iran Pause Strikes for Two Days After Houthis Threaten Blockade of Alternate Shipping Route in Red Sea
Yesterday marked the second straight day in which neither nation bombed the other, the AP reported. It wasn’t totally clear why Trump had stopped destroying Iranian infrastructure after his deal to stop doing that failed completely; the US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, told Fox News that Trump is “giving talks some space. He’s giving it a little bit of room.” Waltz also downplayed that the US is running low on interceptors, which NBC reported last week is why the US is allowing some Iranian missiles and drones to make it through defenses. According to an anonymous AP source, officials in both countries want to go back to the interim ceasefire deal Trump decided to abandon, and that there’s a compromise underway for the Strait of Hormuz that would place fewer restrictions on ships.
The “little bit of room” comes as Houthi rebels undertake action on another trade route. Per the AP:
Concerns continued about shipping on the strait and now on another crucial waterway in the region, the Bab al-Mandeb strait to the Red Sea. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen last week threatened a blockade of Saudi shipping there.
Global energy supplies and the economy remain in the balance as gasoline prices have risen again.

Maine Dems Pick Troy Jackson to Take Down US Sen. Susan Collins
Progressive former state legislator Troy Jackson will replace credibly accused rapist Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee, the Bangor Daily News, NYT and Portland Press Herald reported. Jackson won 566 to 5 at the state convention and vowed to stay laser focused on defeating Republican Sen. Susan Collins, the longtime lawmaker who helped usher in Trump’s mass deportation terror campaign, which came home to Maine recently when immigration agent and serial domestic abuser David Brouillette shot to death 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, then asked one of the ex-wives he terrorized to lie for him to cover it up. Collins has blood on her hands and should not have her job anymore, a fact that Jackson stayed locked on during his nomination acceptance speech on Saturday. According to Politico, he attacked her record relentlessly for 20 minutes straight, noting that she voted nearly exclusively with Trump and that she lied in 1990, when she promised she’d only serve two terms and then went on to serve five. Here’s hoping she fails to make it to six.

- New Jersey Becomes Third State to Outlaw Surveillance Pricing Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed the Fair Price Protection Act to stop retailers from using shoppers’ data about location, online activity and purchase history to jack up prices on whoever it thinks will pay them, a practice Connecticut and Maryland also ban. via the Guardian and NJ.gov.

Protesters decried the government’s ongoing effort to exclude trans people from public life, carried signs that said “let people piss in peace,” “these meds save lives,” and ones paying homage to their trans siblings past and present. Per the Standard, protesters “voiced their anger at the new guidance on single sex-spaces and called on new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to make a positive difference to the LGBTQ+ community.”
