Top General Tells Trump More Bombing Will Break Iran Stalemate
Donald Trump is refusing to take the L in his war on Iran, and the consequences for the world could prove catastrophic. NBC News reports that Trump is "exasperated" with his advisers over the US military's failures in his illegal war of choice. Trump reportedly "exploded" and began "yelling expletives" at a meeting of top national security officials last week. One of those officials warned that despite a few "tactical victories” against Iran, the US is "facing a strategic defeat without clear policy guidance or a decision about where this is going." Trump, one ally claims, "did not intend this to be a long, drawn-out war."
If that's the case, why does he continue to escalate? One answer, according to the Wall Street Journal, is the advice he's getting from Adm. Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, "who has been quietly directing the war from his Tampa, Fla., headquarters," and has been advocating for Trump to "go big" with a stepped-up bombing campaign. And Trump appears to be listening.
The US launched a wave of airstrikes against "dozens" of targets in Iran last night. "We're going to be hitting them very hard because it's our turn to hit them," Trump blathered, after vowing on Fox News to "beat the fucking shit out of" Iran. Spoken like a true statesman.
The expanded air campaign comes as Trump's ally Saudi Arabia has entered the war with strikes on eastern Iraq, and as Iran opens up new fronts with missile campaigns and allied militias across the region. Al Jazeera reports that Iranian families are shouldering the costs of war, including US sanctions and a naval blockade, but that the country's economy is continuing to function regardless. But the cost Iran's military is imposing on the rest of the world through the closure of oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz may yet prove more consequential. Oil prices jumped again yesterday thanks to Trump's escalation.
Trump is still looking for a symbolic win in this failed war. With luck his addled mind can still see the good sense in declaring victory and bringing American forces home before more lives are sacrificed for the sake of one old man's bloated ego.
