Regime Plans to Hike Prescription Drug Costs for Seniors
Donald Trump has gone out of his way to scoff at Americans' affordability concerns, repeatedly suggesting that the word itself was concocted by Democratic consultants, but there's still more he can do to make everyday life more expensive for ordinary people. The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times report that the Trump regime plans to end a Medicare subsidy that will leave senior citizens paying higher rates for prescription drug coverage.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, isn't denying the regime's plan to end the subsidy. Instead, he argues the subsidy is an unnecessary "bailout" of "Big Insurance Companies" like UnitedHealth Group. But that's not the whole story. The Journal reports:
"The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, a federal watchdog agency, estimates the subsidy program, which was supposed to stabilize Part D, reduced the average Part D plan premium by about 40% in 2025. This year, it cut the average rate by an estimated 27%."
Protect Our Care, a left-leaning benefits defense group, says the decision to end the prescription drug subsidy is only the latest MAGA assault on health care affordability. “Donald Trump and Republicans are making health care more expensive for seniors at every turn. In the middle of a GOP-induced affordability crisis, they are eliminating a key program that helps seniors afford their medications, meaning countless seniors will soon pay more just to get the life-saving prescriptions they need," Protect Our Care chair Leslie Dach says. "For older Americans living on fixed incomes, even an extra ten or twenty dollars a month can mean choosing between filling their prescription, paying the electric bill, or buying groceries. Seniors deserve lower prescription drug costs and affordable health care. Instead of lowering costs, Donald Trump and Republicans continue to force seniors to pay more while handing tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations."
Seniors will learn about next year's prescription drug rates this fall. Before or after the midterms?

Beshear Calls the Question of McConnell's Competency
Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear yesterday released a letter sent to Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell's office on Monday demanding, essentially, proof of life. McConnell has been out of commission for at least 44 days, when news broke of his hospitalization. Since then, the only evidence he's not brain dead, as rumored, has been two painfully garish photos showing him smiling, or grimacing, from his hospital bed, disregarding the accounts of Republican colleagues who say they've conversed with the former Senate Majority Leader.
"As Governor of the state he serves, I am calling on him to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of his capacity to serve, or resign," Beshear wrote. Failing that, he will demand a full investigation of McConnell's condition and begin the process of vacating his seat. A recent Kentucky law requires a special election to replace a vacated Senate seat, but Beshear has indicated he might challenge that law and assert his power to name a replacement.
US and Saudis Bomb Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq
Saudi Arabia appears to have directly entered Donald Trump's war on Iran, the Washington Post reports. Saudi fighter jets joined American war planes in a joint strike on Iranian-backed Arab militias yesterday in eastern Iraq, following dozens of drone attacks reportedly "directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in recent days." Apart from deepening the Saudi rulers' entanglement with Trump, the attacks suggest the Iran war won't be ending any time soon. For what it's worth, those targeted Iraqi militias deny they were involved in the drone attacks. Meanwhile, Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the first time since Trump launched the Iran war. And the New York Times reports that Iran considered attacking Ukraine in response to a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian ship, further widening the war, "but a flurry of diplomacy has calmed the situation for now."

That's how much an educational nonprofit founded by MAGA "alpha male" influencer Nick Adams paid him and his mother in 2024, a sum comprising over half of the organization's revenue. ProPublica's investigators were unable to find any significant "indication in the organization’s annual federal tax filings that it was spending money on its stated mission." Adams, born Nicholas Adamopoulos, was named Donald Trump's special envoy for American tourism, exceptionalism and values after his nomination as ambassador to Malaysia flopped.
