Get 'im! Trump Federally Indicted in Florida - The Friday AM Quickie 6/9/23

It looks like the House Republicans are trying to take the lead on UFO hearings. I think the Senate is a better venue for that, and not only because Democrats run it, though that is a factor. - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

Nice: Trump Indicted in Stolen Documents Case

Well, it happened again. In a long rant about President Joe Biden's garage door, Donald Trump mentioned last night on Truth Social that he had been federally indicted. CNN quickly confirmed as much with other sources, as did ABC News, and then the New York Times and others came out with more complete reporting about the still-sealed indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Miami:

Trump was charged with a total of seven counts, including willfully retaining national defense secrets in violation of the Espionage Act and an obstruction of justice conspiracy...
Trump is expected to surrender himself to authorities in Miami on Tuesday, according to a person close to him and his own post on Truth Social.

WITCH HUNT, you say? I say burn baby burn! Trump himself is said to feel misled by his staff about the likelihood of this happening. He immediately started fundraising off of the news, of course. I expect we'll know a lot more about the state's case by Monday morning.

Violent Extremism Is Part of the GOP Package Deal

The Daily Beast confirms what activists on the scene reported the other day: Proud Boys and Jan. 6 insurrectionists were present at this week's melee outside a Glendale, California school board meeting.

The violence came only days after another protest at Saticoy Elementary School in North Hollywood, where one person was left unresponsive on the ground during a demonstration against a Pride assembly.
None of the far-right protesters The Daily Beast identified have children in the Glendale school district, or even live in Glendale.

A failed Glendale City Council candidate and right-wing social media troll named Jordan Henry has reportedly been leading the city's anti-LGBTQ contigent, which has grown increasingly active over the last couple of months. "I don't think Jordan Henry started off thinking he would be leading Proud Boys through the streets," a local parent supportive of LGBTQ inclusion in schools says. "I think he was trying to cultivate right-wing social media personality status for himself. But it's got out of control." And not only in Glendale.

This week the Southern Poverty Law Center released its annual "year in hate and extremism report," covering 2022. It says "the hard-right movement succeeded in burrowing deeper into people's lives in visible and material ways," and notes that "Republican politicians now mingle freely with members of the organized white nationalist movement and employ their rhetoric more freely than at any other time in recent American history." Among the 1,225 active groups tracked by the non-profit Center, the report drew special attention to Moms for Liberty, a fast-growing "parental rights" organization dedicated to banning school books and persecuting LGBTQ students and teachers. Vice News reports that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will be attending Moms for Liberty's annual conference in Philadelphia on June 29, as will his fellow GOP presidential contenders Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, and, of course, Donald Trump.

The Washington Post reports that despite the successful seditious conspiracy prosecution of the leaders of the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, along with 650-plus convictions of Jan. 6 rioters, "the threat of political violence remains stubbornly present."

A key, dangerous part of the legacy of Jan. 6 is the "normalized political violence we've seen grip the country," said Cynthia Miller-Idriss, who leads an extremism research lab at American University. She and other extremism researchers said they have observed no letup in the targeting of members of Congress, local officials and marginalized communities.

Meanwhile in Australia, the government is preparing to ban the public display of Nazi symbols on account of an increase of far-right group activity, including street violence. Why do so many self-styled free speech absolutists refuse to accept that fascist violence is itself designed to suppress the freedom of expression?

Supreme Court Ruling Will Reshape Voting Maps

In a surprisingly not-terrible decision, the Supreme Court yesterday ruled 5-4 to uphold the Voting Rights Act in a racial gerrymandering case brought on behalf of Black voters in Alabama. Per the Associated Press, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the court's liberal minority to affirm a lower-court ruling against an Alabama congressional map that was drawn to minimize Black representation. Alabama will now need to redraw its district maps for next year's elections. The Los Angeles Times reports that congressional maps in other Southern states -- namely Louisiana, South Carolina, and Georgia -- could change, as well. The resulting districts could potentially shift up to four U.S. House seats to Democrats. Evan Milligan, the lead plaintiff in the case, called the ruling "a win for democracy and freedom."

A Constitutional Amendment for Gun Control?

It sounds like a long shot, but Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom tells NBC News that he is trying to build support in state legislatures to pass a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to address the scourge of mass shootings. Per Politico, Newsom's proposal would ban assault rifles nationwide; mandate background checks and a waiting period for all gun purchases; and raise the minimum age to buy a gun to 21 from 18. "We're sick of being on the defense and throwing up our hands," Newsom says. "We want to go on the offense and be for something." Meanwhile, Politico reports on several recent polls showing that younger Republicans are increasingly open to certain gun control measures, such as mandatory psychological exams for gun purchasers. Observers say those survey results reflect the fact that gun violence has become the leading cause of death for children and teens. Go figure!
