THE BIG NEWS

Trump Promises to Govern Like a Dictator

Former President Donald Trump has increasingly telegraphed his intent to fulfill his authoritarian appetites, should he be elected again next year. During a speech for Veterans Day, Trump promised to "root out the communists, Marxists, fascists, and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country." The former president, who has claimed he won every state in the 2020 election, recently has appeared unhinged, even by his skewed standards, using language that recalls 1930s fascist dictators. He has said that Hungarian President Viktor Orban asked Barack Obama to resign (Joe Biden is the US president), that he had beaten Obama in the 2016 election, and that Orban is the president of Turkey. Attempting to stem public concern, advisors have downplayed Trump's leaked plan that calls for using the Department of Justice to prosecute political opponents and invoking the Insurrection Act to use the military to suppress peaceful protests. But some Trump advisors have embraced the new, ultra-belligerent register, with campaign spokesman Steven Cheung telling the New York Times:

"Those who try to make that ridiculous assertion are clearly snowflakes grasping for anything because they are suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, and their sad, miserable existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House."

UAW Gains Trickling Down to Other Auto Workers

After the United Auto Workers reached an important deal with three major auto manufacturers to end a labor strike earlier this month, other automakers seem to be following suit. Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota have announced raises for factory workers. "UAW, that stands for ‘You Are Welcome,'" said powerhouse UAW President Shawn Fain, who has also announced his intention to unionize Tesla. Workers at General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis are expected to receive raises of about 33 percent. Even so, workers at a Ford plant in Kentucky voted against the new UAW deal, indicating that some auto workers may be expecting more from their ambitious union leadership.

  • New Labor Guideline Could Grow Union Membership A new rule from the National Labor Relations Board set to be implemented next month should make it easier for workers at franchisees of big companies to form unions. Corporations are already suing to challenge it, but the NLRB may have just opened the door to millions of fast food and hotel workers to be able to better collectively bargain. via PBS.
  • Democratic Staffers At Odds With Their Bosses Over Gaza Democratic politicos, especially those under 35, are increasingly disagreeing with members of Congress and the Biden administration over Israel/Palestine policy. Staffers have engaged in coordinated walkouts, protests, open letters, and dissent cables – nearly all done anonymously – in a reflection of generational differences regarding foreign policy. via The New York Times.
  • The Speaker of the House Has Weird Finances Why doesn't Mike Johnson, the newly installed Republican Speaker, not report having a checking account, despite earning six figures? Where does he keep his money? The story gets stranger. via The Daily Beast.
  • FDIC Employees Report Sexist Work Environment Female workers at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the regulator that insures bank deposits for consumers, have experienced sexism, harassment, and a toxic culture extending back years. The FDIC has brought on a law firm to investigate. via The Wall Street Journal.

That's how many US workers experience heat-related injuries annually, according to In These Times. Despite some recent highly publicized deaths of heat-stricken delivery workers, no federal standards exist governing heat exposure on the job. Everyone from UPS drivers to farmworkers are demanding added protections in union contracts and in new legislation. "Farmworkers are 35 times more likely to die from heat" than other workers, according to one researcher. Activists and unions are concerned that, absent further intervention, thousands more Americans could die from extreme heat each year as climate change worsens.

UAW Reflects On Their Inspiring Wave Of Labor Victories

Is UAW president Shawn Fain the most effective labor leader in the country?

PARTING WORDS

"The absence of a Code, however, has led in recent years to the misunderstanding that the Justices of this Court, unlike all other jurists in this country, regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules. To dispel this misunderstanding, we are issuing this Code, which largely represents a codification of principles that we have long regarded as governing our conduct."

-- From a new Code of Conduct for Supreme Court Justices. The rules aren't "new," the Court says, merely newly codified and published. Covering finances, political activity, conflicts of interest, and other concerns, the guidelines have seemingly been violated – repeatedly – by some justices, notably Clarence Thomas, who has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and luxury travel from benefactors like billionaire Harlan Crow.
