THE BIG NEWS

The Government Will Stay Open – For Now

The US House of Representatives passed a bill by a vote of 336 to 95 to keep the government funded and functioning through early next year. The bill should pass the Senate before it's signed by President Joe Biden. The nae votes were mostly Republican hardliners angry about spending. Newly installed Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was one of those dissenters in September, when Kevin McCarthy was booted out of his speakership. Now, Johnson has shepherded through a similar bill and may have doomed himself with members of the Republican Freedom Caucus, which denounced the bill. Fortunately, we get to do this all over again in a few months.

Starbucks Workers Plan Major Strike

Thousands of Starbucks employees around the country plan to walk out tomorrow as part of a coordinated strike that's been deemed the Red Cup Rebellion. The strike is timed for one of the coffee chain's most popular days of the year and is meant to protest unfair labor practices, which has included firing workers who attempted to unionize.

Republican Senator Challenges Teamsters Honcho to a Fight

Continuing the theme of political pugilism, Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin challenged Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien to a physical fight during a hearing yesterday in the Senate. "This is the time, this is the place," Mullin said. "If you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here." O'Brien seemed unimpressed – he called Mullin "a schoolyard bully" who he didn't respect – before Sen. Bernie Sanders stepped in and told Mullin to sit down.

SOME NUMBER

$73 million

That's how much money Truth Social, the social media platform started by former President Donald Trump, has lost since it began operating in February 2022, according to a new SEC filing. The social network was supposed to have gone public via a SPAC offering but has been mired in an SEC investigation into its financing. "[Trump Media and Technology Group] has suffered negative cash flows and recurring losses from operations that raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern," the filing reads, adding that if the SPAC merger doesn't go through, Truth Social might wither on the vine. Oh no.

PARTING WORDS

“Nothing's getting tamed. Nothing, nothing, nothing. He'll continue to be strangled—[if] you want to use that awful term for it. He'll continue to be loved by his father in a specific way.”

-- James L. Brooks, creator of "The Simpsons," assuring People Magazine readers that Homer Simpson will continue to occasionally strangle his son Bart. The violent gag is a staple of the Homer-Bart relationship but hasn't been depicted on the show in several years.
