Peace Agreement (?)

US and Iranian officials agreed to a preliminary peace deal in which Trump surrendered to Iran’s “oft-repeated position that the only way to end this standoff is through negotiation, not war,” the New York Times reported yesterday. “For their domestic and regional base, they proved themselves the underdog, capable of taking on two nuclear-armed powers,” analyst Ellie Geranmayeh, author of the European Council of Foreign Relations’ Iran Nuclear Monitor told the Times. “They are now coming out with a stronger geopolitical hand than before given their dominance in the Strait of Hormuz. They also demonstrated that Trump’s nuclear dilemma with Iran won’t be resolved through military might.”

The report came as Trump gave mixed messages throughout the weekend, saying first on Saturday that the deal was “largely negotiated,” then following that on Sunday by ordering negotiators “not to rush into a deal,” the Associated Press and the NYT reported. His messaging is confusing because he is a dotard and his regime is a disarrayed snakepit of incompetents.

Questions about how Iran will handle its nuclear program, highly enriched uranium, ballistic missiles, or militias appear to be put off until later, the news outlets reported. According to the Washington Post and the Guardian, the possible deal will include a 60-day ceasefire, during which Iran will gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the US will halt its blockade. Per the Post:

The U.S. would allow Iran to sell its oil through sanctions waivers, said the second official, who has been briefed on the negotiations. Sanctions relief and the release of Iran’s frozen funds would be negotiated during the 60-day time frame, the official said.

Both officials said the draft deal includes an end to the war between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.

Gaza Freedom Flotilla Activists Allege Israeli Guards Raped Them in Prison

Israeli prison guards raped and abused international activists after they arrested them for attempting to take aid to Gaza via international waters, Reuters reported. Israeli forces arrested 430 people on 50 ships; they sexually assaulted and raped 15 of the activists and abused others so extremely that they required hospitalization, including breaking their bones and shooting them with rubber bullets at close range. The worst instance of sexual abuse was on an Israeli landing craft “which had been converted into a makeshift prison with barbed wire and shipping containers.” Per NBC News:

Detainees were thrown into the containers and beaten over the head and ribs, the group said in a statement.

They suffered multiple cases of sexual abuse, including “humiliating strip searches, sexual taunting, groping and pulling of genitals, and multiple accounts of rape.”

“At least 12 sexual assaults have been documented on that vessel alone, including anal rape and forcible penetration by a handgun,” it added.

Prosecutors in Rome will take testimony from activists when they return and are investigating their kidnapping, torture and sexual assault claims; French activists on the trip were hospitalized in Turkey, including for broken ribs and vertebrae.

Officers Kill Man Who Fired Multiple Shots Near White House

Secret Service officers shot to death 21-year-old Nasire Best, after Best allegedly opened fire near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, according to the AP, the Washington Post and MS Now. The shooting follows two other incidents where people fired guns near Trump in recent days, including near the Washington Monument earlier this month and in April at the White House Correspondents’ Association’s annual genuflection display, I mean, dinner. Reporters at the White House said they heard dozens of shots fired; according to the AP, authorities arrested Best last July when he tried to get into the White House and refused to obey officers’ command to stop because he “claimed he was Jesus Christ.” The news of yet another attack on or near Trump was met online and among my small personal sample set with a collective shrug and this comment from one person: “Yeah, well, people hate that guy.”

That’s how many people are under an indefinite evacuation order in Southern California, after authorities found that a damaged chemical tank 40 miles outside Los Angeles could leak or explode. The tank holds between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, which can harm the respiratory and neurological systems, irritate skin, eyes, and throat, and knock people unconscious. Manufacturers use the chemical in the production of plastic parts; GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems is the company that owns the chemical tank facility.
