Congratulations and solidarity forever to Lyft and Uber drivers in Massachusetts, the first rideshare drivers in the country to unionize! The newly certified App Drivers Union represents about 70,000 drivers, who will now bargain their first contract to increase wages and improve job security. Management should meet them at the table and negotiate in good faith. -Whitney

THE BIG NEWS
ICE Pepper Sprays US Senator, Attacks Protesters Outside NJ Concentration Camp
Federal agents attacked protesters and elected officials outside an immigrant concentration camp in Newark, NJ on Monday, after the group had spent the weekend protesting its horrific conditions, The City, The Guardian, InsiderNJ and NJ.com reported. Protesters had gathered outside the camp, Delaney Hall, after a group of 300 prisoners announced they had undertaken a hunger and labor strike to demand that officials close the prison and “free every person in there,” said Gabriela Soto, whose husband, Martin Soto, has been inside Delaney for five months. They are also calling for the immediate release of medically vulnerable prisoners. As I wrote last week, prisoners say they are “tortured physically and psychologically” inside Delaney Hall, including that they have inadequate food, medical attention and legal representation, that Covid-19 and flu are rampant, and that children are suffering psychologically.
The agents attacked after a brief and unhappy visit by New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill, during which protesters yelled in her face for failing to show up earlier, as multiple other elected officials did. She spoke to the crowd and told them she asked to go inside and was refused. She left after about an hour; some protesters tried to stop her from leaving. Kathy O’Leary, coordinator of Pax Christi New Jersey, told the Jersey Vindicator that she wasn’t impressed by Sherrill’s performance and noted that Sherrill had repeatedly voted to fund ICE when she was a Congressional member. “She has as much responsibility for this place being here as the other congresspeople do, and yet she’s kind of acting like, ‘Oh, there’s nothing I can do here.’ And she’s moving on. She treated this like a photo op,” O’Leary said.
Once Sherrill was gone, “the scene quickly worsened,” as the NYT put it in a story that includes a description of Sherrill’s outfit for some reason. ICE thugs in military gear struck protesters with batons and shot them with pepper balls and pepper spray. They hit Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ), who had been trying to broker an agreement between the agents and the protesters, and Mussab Ali, who is running for Congress in New Jersey’s 8th Congressional District. They also stationed an armored BearCat with a mount and gun, which an ICE agent repeatedly pointed at protesters. “What we saw here is unfortunately just what we see all over the country,” Kim told NJ.com. “It’s sad, it’s a sad day.”
