Democrats Warn That Biden's Very Trumpy Asylum Order Will Not Help Him Win Reelection

As Jacob told you yesterday, President Joe Biden's rightward march on immigration, pandering to Americans' worst xenophobic tendencies, continues with a fresh crackdown on the internationally guaranteed right to seek asylum. Republicans, predictably, are not satisfied with Biden's new aslyum policy, with Stephen Miller, unofficial head of racism during the Trump administration, calling it "a pro-invasion executive order." Democrats aren't happy either. Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair Rep. Nanette Barragán of California says she is "disappointed," which is rather diplomatic considering the brutal reality of Biden's new policy. Meanwhile Clarissa Martinez de Castro of UnidosUS tells NBC News that Biden's announcement is "political malpractice. They're ceding the space and allowing people with a different view to define them." Congressional Progressive Caucus chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington State agrees, and has, per the Washington Post, told White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients that "we should be distinguishing ourselves from Donald Trump on immigration," not parroting him. In addition to being bad politics, it's bad policy. "This asylum ban will fail to address the challenges at our border, just as it did under the Trump Administration," Democratic California Sen. Alex Padilla says. Besides being bad for the economy, the new rule is also, as Democratic Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva notes, "antithetical to our values." Biden's promise to "never demonize immigrants" rings hollow.

Teamsters to Absorb Independent Amazon Labor Union

The Washington Post (owned and mismanaged by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos) reports that two years after its historic organizing victory on Staten Island, the upstart Amazon Labor Union is seeking to affiliate with the massive Teamsters union. ALU President Chris Smalls, whose leadership has come under fire from a dissident caucus within the union, says "the move to affiliate with the Teamsters 'made sense as opposed to working on separate campaigns' to organize Amazon." The affiliation agreement specifies that ALU will constitute an "autonomous" Teamsters local, but does not specify whether members will pay dues to the Teamsters. The dissident faction, called the ALU Democratic Reform Caucus, is pushing back against the merger, the Associated Press reports. Reform Caucus attorney Arthur Schwartz says the Teamsters want "the ALU membership to ratify the new agreement before the union holds its internal leadership election in July. But he said that will pose a challenge because the ALU currently doesn't have an updated list of members, which the caucus has been seeking for the internal election that's currently underway." Whatever happens with the merger, here's hoping Amazon organizers can regain their momentum.

-- Attorney General Merrick Garland, scolding Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee yesterday over their threat to hold him in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over recordings of Special Counsel Robert Hur's interviews with President Joe Biden.
