Biden Embraces Right Wing Border Policy, Cracking Down on Asylum Requests

President Joe Biden is expected to issue an executive order that would essentially shut down the US-Mexico border and the ability for people to request asylum, perhaps for an indefinite length of time. The order would go into effect "once the average number of daily encounters [between migrants and the Border Patrol] hits 2,500," according to the AP. The border would re-open when "daily encounters" drop to 1,500, but given the level of ongoing migration, that figure might be tough to reach. Biden is expected to unveil the order while surrounded by mayors from border towns.

The draconian order is the toughest border measure enacted by any Democratic president and would have been at home in the Trump administration. It's supposed to somehow make up for the administration's failure to pass a right-wing border legislation package in February, for which some Republicans had promised support. The legislation fell apart partly over policy differences (MAGA Republicans wanted it separated from aid to Ukraine and Israel). Trump-supporting Republicans also did not want to grant Biden a "win" – such as it was. Naturally, Republicans have already criticized the new order as "too little, too late," according to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

The ACLU challenged Trump's border policies and has indicated it may soon do the same with Biden's. Biden's order reportedly invokes Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which also provided the legal underpinning for Trump's Muslim ban. The courts put a stop to that one. Hopefully they can again.

Corporate Media Struggles to Foment Panic Around Mexico's New President

Mexico recently elected Claudia Sheinbaum – a climate scientist, former environment minister, and mayor of Mexico City – as its first female president. Expected to continue the populist program of her mentor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Sheinbaum has been described as more of a leftist technocrat than a firebrand, but that hasn't stopped US publications from painting her as a potential terror south of the border. A speculative, almost free-associating piece in the Washington Post asked if Mexico was backsliding toward one-party rule. A number of outlets gently noted Sheinbaum's historic candidacy – she won by a massive margin and happens to be Mexico's first president of Jewish descent – while posing questions like, "But who is Claudia Sheinbaum?"

The material basis for the anxiety seems to be less about Mexico's ongoing drug cartel violence than the possibility that Sheinbaum might exert more government control over the oil sector. US energy CEOs are worried about their investments. Or, as the New York Times' headline put it: "A Climate Scientist Is Voted President of an Oil Country. Now What?"

Fauci Gets Grilled By Congressional Committee

Former public health official Dr. Anthony Fauci testified in front of a House subcommittee investigating the Covid-19 pandemic. Fauci spoke about the death threats that he and his family have received and his need for constant security. Asked to account for revelations that a former National Institute of Health senior adviser (and Fauci colleague) had used a private email account and other methods to withhold information from potential FOIA requests, Fauci said that the adviser's behavior was "an aberrancy and an outlier." He said he did not know the origins of the virus, had not bribed researchers as part of any cover-up, and maintains "an open mind as to what the origin is."

  • New York State Considers Social-Media Regulations for Teens The New York state legislature plans to introduce a bill that would bar social-media companies from using algorithmic recommendations on teenage users without their parents' consent. The intention behind the bill is to limit the addictive quality of social-media feeds, which serve up a constant stream of ads and content calculated to keep the user engaged. via WSJ and Reuters.
