Haitian College Student Kills Himself After Trump Revokes Protected Status, Shackles Him With Ankle Monitor 

A Haitian immigrant in Springfield, Ohio, who recently graduated high school with honors, died Monday when he walked into traffic on Interstate 70 and was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer, according to the Springfield News-Sun and the Washington Post. Pierre Damas Bel, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family said he took his own life because he was distraught after Trump revoked his temporary protected status, along with 350,000 other Haitian immigrants, and then shackled him with an ankle monitor despite the fact that he had no history of violence or crime. 

Bel was a new student at Wright State University and planned to study neuroscience and physiology in preparation for medical school. He loved playing soccer, was a member of the National Honor Society and served in his Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. He arrived in the United States from Haiti just two years ago, reuniting with his parents in 2024 after they had fled the violence that AMQ related to you earlier this week. He was an older brother to two siblings, and his family said he was “smart and responsible.”  

“I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone,” he wrote on social media, the Post reported. “Yet now I’m walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience.”

Markey Trounces Moulton in Massachusetts Primary

Incumbent Democratic Senator Ed Markey won his primary with about 65 percent of the vote Tuesday night, beating Rep. Seth Moulton, who tried but failed to use Markey’s age against him, the AP, the Boston Globe and the Guardian reported. At 80 years old, Markey is the oldest Senate Democrat seeking re-election. Moulton is 47. Other differences include that Markey is a longtime progressive, a supporter of universal healthcare, the Green New Deal, and trans rights, and has the endorsements of fellow progressives. Moulton, meanwhile, doesn’t support universal healthcare and made ugly comments about trans people. 

New USPS Rule Would Throw Out Mailed Ballots in Bulk: Whistleblower 

US Postal Service officials are violating a court order and carrying out a “secretive, rushed” plan to disenfranchise millions of Americans who cast their ballots by mail, said a whistleblower report Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released yesterday, according to the New York Times, the New Republic and Talking Points Memo. The whistleblower said USPS officials are scrambling to implement Trump’s imperial decree restricting mail voting – though US District Court judge Indira Talwani put it on hold – and have sloppily implemented a new digital system to do so. They’ve eliminated all testing and cut so many corners that it’s unclear whether millions of American voters will receive their mail-in ballots in time or at all. And for those who do get their ballots, there’s no guarantee the government will ever count them. That’s because if the system finds a faulty ballot, it will throw it out, along with every other ballot in the same batch. Per the NYT: 

The official at the Postal Service raised “grave concerns” in the report that the verification process in the system could reject tens of thousands of ballots in a bulk-mailing batch if “even one bar code on one single ballot” failed to properly scan, and that the rushed, “slapdash” development of the system would significantly increase the chance of errors and other failures in the verification process.

The whistleblower said the entire project was “a shit show” and that “USPS leadership, it appears, has discarded all best practices as they speed the project to be ready for a September 1 implementation — raising questions about whether catastrophic failure would be a feature rather than a bug.” 

In other election-stealing news, the Guardian reported that Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said he might send federal immigration agents to polling places. But it wouldn’t be for raids (necessarily); it would be “if there is a threat to that polling place or we’re serving a warrant on someone,” so don’t worry about it! It is worth noting that federal law forbids armed agents “at any place where a general or special election is held.”

US Military Bombs Wedding in New Wave of Strikes on Iran 

The US military bombed multiple sites in Iran yesterday in retaliation to attempted attack on American assets, the Wall Street Journal reported. Tuesday’s attacks came after fighting resumed over the weekend with an American attack on Iranian launchers “that it said were preparing to fire rockets loaded with sea mines into the strait” and Iran responded by shooting missiles at US military bases. The US targets on Tuesday included multiple civilian sites, including a civilian airport and a home in which people were holding a wedding ceremony, the Associate Press reported. The wedding attack killed four people, including a child, and injured 50 more.

  • Department of the Interior Appeals Board Stays Data Center on Public Land The board issued a temporary stay on the 80-acre Townsite Data Center planned near Boulder City, Nevada, saying that the federal government likely violated the National Environmental Policy Act to approve it; the project would have been the first artificial intelligence monstrosity built on public land. via Common Dreams and the Nevada Current.
