Cops Riot Outside NJ Concentration Camp
Immigration agents and state police repeatedly beat and gassed protesters outside the Newark, NJ concentration camp Delaney Hall this weekend, where immigrant prisoners inside are on a labor and hunger strike over inhumane and deadly conditions, AMNY, the Guardian and NJ.com reported. The troops, empowered by Gov. Mikie Sherrill, were tricked out in riot gear and used horses to trample protesters. They carried long guns and other loaded, lethal weapons, fired teargas and pepper ball pellets, and protected Proud Boys and other far-right agitators. Some protesters alerted me on Saturday to the fact that they also had an LRAD on site – a long-range acoustic device that can be used as a sonic weapon and permanently damage hearing.
The attacks came after Sherrill said Friday that state police would replace Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents outside the camp. Then she had them set up a “protected speech zone” with barricades, with the intention of forcing protesters to stay in one place, which did not work because police knocked down the barricade because they were the ones rioting. They beat protesters bloody and arrested six people. They continued their abuse on Saturday and helped the little group of far-right counterprotesters who showed up. Those wreckers included Mike Crispi, who pretends to think undocumented people are voting for Democrats, which is “pure fiction, as various studies and common sense suggests,” as Insider NJ put it.
State actors do not want anyone to know what’s going on and throughout the weekend specifically targeted journalists to stop them from reporting, including trampling photojournalists and breaking their bones and equipment. They attacked Reuters photojournalist Ryan Murphy and broke his finger; they struck freelance photographer Madison Swart with a baton. They forced a WNBC crew to leave the scene. A phalanx of cops forced MS Now’s Ali Velshi to leave the protest Saturday night and refused to answer any of his questions about why they were removing press or even how far back he had to go on the several-mile long warehouse-district road, an interaction captured on-camera. As he was walking, Velshi remarked on the horde of cops: “This is the sort of presence that one would have been used to in New York City after 9-11 when they used to do those COBRA [Chemical Ordnance, Biological and Radiological Awareness] exercises where they would converge to simulate a terrorist response, I mean there are more police cares then there probably were protesters at this point, but as you can see, the police are taking removing the press from the scene very, very seriously.”
Officials then deployed yet another weapon to deter protesters and journalists: Newark Mayor Ras Baraka ordered a mandatory curfew for the half-mile around Delaney Hall, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice. He is restricting vehicles to only those with official business and closing the area to all pedestrian traffic. It’s worth remembering that the Department of Homeland Security arrested Baraka outside Delaney Hall last May, when he attempted to join a tour of the facility.

“Fishermen endure the forces of nature: wind, rain and sun. But they also face pirates, and on top of that, now there is this bombing thing,” said one Ecuadorean woman from a fishing family in San Mateo, a seaside town of 5,000. Like many in these coastal Ecuadorean villages, she asked not to have her name published for fear of retribution from the government, which has actively supported the bombing campaign. The Ecuadorean government did not respond to requests for comment.
“We live in fear of these strikes,” she said, “and because of that, many people have stopped going out to fish.”

- ICE Agent Suspected of Shooting Minnesota Man Arrested in Texas 52-year-old Christian Castro is suspected of shooting Venezuelan national Julio Sosa-Celis during Operation Metro Surge and lying about it. Media reports and Minnesota authorities said agents from the Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General were on the scene with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents who arrested him Friday.
