New York City Panel Advances Mamdani's Rent Freeze Plan

Promises to "freeze the rent" helped propel NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's phenomenal campaign, which is serving as a model for leftist efforts across the country. Yesterday he came closer to delivering that promise, as the city's nine-member Rent Guidelines Board, which sets rents for "roughly 1 million regulated apartments," per Gothamist, voted to consider a freeze. A final vote will come before the end of June, the City reports. Mamdani called the board's vote encouraging and said "New Yorkers are being crushed by the cost of living, and they need real relief."

The meeting was packed with tenant advocates and labor groups pressuring board members to embrace Mamdani's agenda. "Organized tenants helped put Zohran Mamdani in office, and organized tenants will ensure the Rent Guidelines Board delivers on a promise supported by over one million New Yorkers," Sumathy Kumar, director of New York State Tenant Bloc, tells the New York Times." "A rent freeze on one- and two-year leases is a common-sense intervention supported by the data and by tenants who make up the majority of New York City."

US May Close Mexican Consulates Due to Conspiracy Theories

The Spanish newspaper El Pais reports on a leaked-audio scandal dubbed "Hondurasgate," which alleges that the Trump regime and Israel are conspiring with the right-wing government of Honduras to destabilize and topple left-wing governments in Latin America. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Columbia's Gustavo Petro are purportedly top targets of the operation, which includes the creation and dissemination of fake news in the style of a Russian disinformation campaign.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that the State Department will review with an eye toward closing 53 Mexican consulates in the US. "The review comes after claims have been circulating in conservative media in recent months that Mexican consulates interfere in American politics and encourage mass migration to the United States.," the Times says. "The accusations largely originated from Peter Schweizer, a right-wing author and contributor to Breitbart News who has promoted conspiracy theories about foreign government influence." Hm.
