THE BIG NEWS

Warmongering Dotard Donald Trump Seems to Have Forgotten What Made George W. Bush So Unpopular

Three months ago, Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, a supposed anti-interventionist, testified to Congress that Iran was not building a nuclear weapon. That was then. "I don't care what she said," Trump told reporters yesterday. These days he's reportedly listening to Army Gen. Erik Kurilla, commander of US forces in the Middle East, who is said to be "especially close to Israel" and reportedly "believes that a military campaign against Iran will not be as costly as others."

The big question hanging over the world is whether Trump will follow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's lead in attacking Iran to bring down its government. He certainly sounds well, unhinged, even by MAGA standards. In a string of social media posts yesterday Trump demanded Iran's "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER," without explaining what that means. He described Iran's "so-called 'Supreme Leader,'" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as an "easy target," adding, "We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now... Our patience is wearing thin." Oh.

In Tehran, panic has spread amid the ongoing Israeli airstrikes, which have killed nearly 600 people. Many seem to be taking Trump at his word and are fleeing the city. "Tehran is in a state of semi-shutdown. You can say only banks and municipalities are open. Food supplies are running low, the market is almost shut down and Tehran is almost evacuated," one resident tells the Guardian. And in Tel Aviv, where Iran's retaliatory missile strikes have killed two dozen civilians, "the streets have gone quiet as schools and nonessential businesses have closed, public transportation has been scaled back and the military has banned public gatherings," the Washington Post reports.

If Trump does attack Iran directly, or provide cover to invading Israeli troops, Iran will likely fire missiles at US bases in the Middle East, the New York Times reports, and may mine the Strait of Hormuz. As those old enough to have lived through the reckless US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11, under a different Republican president, should remember, there's no telling how long such a war might last, or where it would end, or how much it would cost, in blood or in treasure; there's certainly no guarantee that it would accomplish anything at all.

Not all Republicans are on board with the "bomb Iran" frenzy. As NBC News reports, a bipartisan group of House lawmakers are preparing legislation "to force a vote on a war powers resolution that would require the administration to get approval from Congress before participating in the conflict in any meaningful way." In the Senate, Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine is leading a similar effort. Better hurry.

Gen. Brett Shumate replied unequivocally: 'Yes.'" via the LA Times, Politico, and HuffPost.

Seven Democratic Senators and Bernie Sanders Say It's Time for the Party to Ditch Billionaire Donors

Vermont independent democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and seven Democratic colleagues are telling party leaders it's time to ban super PAC and dark money from primaries. "The American people are disgusted with a corrupt political system that allows Elon Musk to spend $270 million to elect Donald Trump," the senators wrote to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, per the Washington Post. "They want change. We can make change." The senators who joined Sanders are Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Chris Murphy of Connecticut, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Peter Welch of Vermont, Tina Smith of Minnesota, and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. But many of their peers won't be convinced because they don't want to turn away sketchy money.

Eighteen Democratic senators joined Republicans yesterday to pass the hideous GENIUS Act, which will establish cryptocurrency con artistry and corruption as a part of the US financial system. As NBC News reports, one crypto super PAC, Fairshake, spent $195 million in the last election cycle and has already spent $116 million on next year's midterms. Just say no!

PARTING WORDS

"It's time to wake up. ...

"Keep peacefully protesting. There's nothing more patriotic than to peacefully protest for your rights. Because no one's going to liberate los Angeles but Angelenos. No one will redeem America but Americans. No one is coming to save us, but us.

"If this administration is this afraid of just one senator with a question, colleagues, imagine what the voices of tens of millions of Americans peacefully protesting can do."

-- California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, speaking on the floor yesterday for the first time since his arrest last week at a press conference featuring Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Contrary to regime claims that he was "crashing" the event, Padilla says he was escorted to the presser in a federal building in West Los Angeles by a National Guardsman and an FBI agent, who stood silently by his side until his sudden arrest. Padilla also told Politico after his speech that he was "sadly, not shocked in the least bit" by New York City Comptroller Brad Lander's arrest at an immigration court yesterday.
