Israel Bombs Lebanon as Civilian Toll of Exploding Pagers Becomes Clear

The sudden explosion of pagers and walkie-talkies over two days across Lebanon this week "killed at least 37 people and injured more than 3,000," the Associated Press reports. Since the deadly sabotage, "fear and paranoia has taken hold" among civilians across the country. "I saw horrific things," Mohammad al-Mousawi, who lives in a Beirut suburb, says. "Suddenly, we started seeing scooters whizzing by carrying defaced men, some without fingers, some with their guts spilling out. Then the ambulances started coming." Lebanese doctors tell NBC News the attack overwhelmed them and that while most victims were young men, they also treated women and children. Many victims lost both eyes, BBC News reports. Human Rights Watch regional director Lama Fakih says the attacks could constitute a war crime. Former CIA Director John Brennan calls the attack unacceptable because "there is no way the Israelis would have known who was going to have these pagers at the time"; current US officials say Israel warned Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that they were about to launch an operation in Lebanon but gave no specifics. Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah yesterday called the attacks both "an act of war" and "a declaration of war" by Israel against Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, meanwhile, announced "a new phase in the war" with the focus shifting from Gaza to Lebanon; the New York Times says Israel carried out more than 70 airstrikes in Lebanon yesterday.
