THE BIG NEWS

Trump's Intel Director Is Meddling in US Elections

It's been a while since we checked in on former homophobic cult member-turned-Democratic House Rep.-turned-Trump regime Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Reports from the first year of Donald Trump's second term suggested she was sidelined on foreign policy matters, but was still, like other regime officials, primarily concerned with sucking up to her boss. More recent developments show how far she's gone in that department.

The New York Times reports that the regime's story keeps changing about what Gabbard was doing leading an FBI raid on an election center in Fulton County, Georgia, last week. On Wednesday said Trump said he didn't know what Gabbard was doing there, then yesterday he said Attorney General "Pam [Bondi] wanted her to do it." But the Times' sources say Trump personally ordered Gabbard to lead the search in Atlanta, "during which agents seized truckloads of ballots cast in 2020," which the County now wants returned. The thing is, as DNI, Gabbard isn't legally supposed to be involved in domestic law enforcement – and this naked attempt to rewrite election results to please Trump doesn't even count as lawful policing.

It turns out Gabbard has been pretty busy. Reuters and CNN report that she also led a spurious investigation last spring into Puerto Rico's voting machines – which, again, seems well outside her purview. Her conduct has raised alarms within the government. As the Wall Street Journal reported this week, a whistleblower complaint filed last May claims she buried a critical intelligence report for political purposes. But Republicans the House and Senate yesterday took steps to bury that whistleblower complaint, calling it "an attempt to smear Gabbard’s reputation." Seems like she's doing a pretty good job of that on her own!

Meanwhile, Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden – a key watchdog of the intelligence community – sounded his so-called "Wyden siren" this week with a public letter expressing "deep concern" with unspecified, secret "CIA activities." As Wyden watchers note, he "only talks like this when the spies do something real bad." Maybe we'll find out the specifics in a few years.

If you're a teacher, do not show up. We grind the country to a halt." via the Guardian, The American Prospect, and NBC News.

Trump Moves to End Protections for 50,000 Federal Workers

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Office of Personnel Management issued a rule yesterday that will make it easier for Donald Trump to punish or fire senior federal workers who might disagree with him or his far-right extremist policy agenda. OPM Director Scott Kupor claims the new rule is intended to prevent "sabotage." But as HuffPost notes, the rule could be used to fire a civil servant who says climate change is real. American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley says the rule "is a direct assault on a professional, nonpartisan, merit-based civil service and the government services the American people rely on every day," adding that it makes workers "more vulnerable to pressure, retaliation, and political interference, which is exactly the opposite of what the public is asking for right now."

That's how much the price of Bitcoin has declined from its peak of $126,000 in October, the New York Times reports. Cryptocurrency and tech stocks more broadly suffered sharp declines yesterday. The crash has nothing to do with the revelations, reported by the Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News, that the late elite sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein was deeply involved in Silicon Valley and was an early investor in the crypto company Coinbase.

PARTING WORDS

"No. This is ridiculous. These naming rights aren't tradable as part of any negotiations, and neither is the dignity of New Yorkers."

-- New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, responding in a statement yesterday to the news that Donald Trump has been holding up federal funding for a massive New York-New Jersey rail project on the condition that both Washington-Dulles International Airport and New York City's Pennsylvania Station be renamed in his honor. According to Politico, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refused Trump's demand, first reported by Punchbowl News.
