THE BIG NEWS
Voters Crush Trumpism and Send a New Brand of Democrats to Control Senate and House
Abdul El-Sayed Wins in Michigan
Texas! Kansas! Hot Damn!
Eleven years of Donald Trump dominating American politics has been sufficient to destroy the country's social infrastructure, democratic institutions, and international standing. The public has suffered a cost-of-living crisis as billionaires take over more and more of the economy and political corruption runs rampant, led by a Republican Party with no sense of propriety. Citizens have been murdered in the street by Trump's paramilitary thugs while their noncitizen neighbors have been sent to concentration camps, deported, and tortured by the regime. The long coup d'etat of Jan. 6, 2021 succeeded. Human rights have been repealed. The forever wars have returned. Fascism has risen again.
That dark era is coming to an end. Voting in the midterm elections of Trump's disastrous second concluded yesterday. The results (see below) were beyond any expectation of a Democratic wave or even a "blue tsunami" – this was a great flood on a Biblical scale. Democrats won control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, exceeding expectations across the electoral map.
That means come January, a new Congress will be sworn in with strong Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress. The new Democratic majority won't be able to pass legislation that changes people's lives for the better, so long as Trump holds veto power. But neither will Trump be able to advance his MAGA agenda of bigotry and immiseration. He is a lame duck starting today. And he is likely as not to impeached for a third time in the next Congress. His reprehensible enablers, like Nazi-saluting oligarch Elon Musk, will also face investigations from a new Congress with the power to issue subpoenas and make criminal referrals.
And when the 2028 presidential election rolls around, progressive Democrats will finally have the chance to begin rebuilding a more just economy, civic life, the rule of law, and the image of America as a land of freedom and equality, where great things can happen – or, at least, ordinary people can get by and maybe not lose everything to medical bills.
To be sure, Democrats have squandered their power before when voters have granted it to them. But this is a new class of Democrats. In the House, a new leftist formation known as "the Bloc" will pick up where the Squad left off, working toward passage of Medicare for All and a Green New Deal. Leftist positions – including a turn away from Israel's genocide in Gaza – are becoming litmus tests for Democratic nominees.
In the Senate, milquetoast centrism is likewise threatened. Michigan progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed won the country's most closely watched race, defeated loathsome Republican nominee Mike Rogers and brushing off a last-minute knife in the back from his former primary rival, Rep. Haley Stevens. El-Sayed's was the kind of victory that the craven centrists and the political consultant class said wasn't possible. Not only was it possible, it will define the politics of the American left-progressive-liberal coalition for a generation to come.
"We did it," El-Sayed told supporters in his victory speech last night. "We showed that in a battle between the money and the many that the many really can win. And so to all the kids who watched this last month, to all the parents who struggled to explain why the president openly mocked someone for their name or how they pray, let them know tomorrow that the bad guys lost."

SOME NUMBER
16 percentage points
That's the average shift in favor of Democrats in counties that reported most of their votes last night, according to the New York Times. The shift to Republicans in 2024, when Donald Trump won the White House for a second time, was only 5 percentage points. "Even in states where Democrats did not win, voters still shifted sharply to the left from 2024," the Times reports. "Results in Tennessee and Kentucky each shifted 18 points toward Democrats."
