Ukraine Agress to 30-Day Ceasfire – But Will Russia?

In another "dizzying" foreign policy turnabout, the United States has agreed to restore military assistance to and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, after diplomats in Saudi Arabia agreed to a proposal for "an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire." A joint statement by the US and Ukraine yesterday from talks in Jeddah announced the deal even as a large swarm of Ukrainian drones struck Moscow and Russian forces fought to dislodge Ukrainian soldiers from Sudzha, the largest city in the Kursk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the pending ceasefire deal "not only stop[s] missile, drone, and bomb attacks, not only in the Black Sea, but also along the entire front line." The bargain Donald Trump wants from Zelenskyy to sign away profits from Ukraine's mineral resources for generations hence will be negotiated separately "as soon as possible," according to the joint statement.

"We'll take this offer now to the Russians, and we hope that they'll say yes, that they'll say yes to peace," Donald Trump's hapless-until-now Secretary of State Marco Rubio said yesterday. "The ball is now in their court." But Zelenskyy says "it is up to the United States to convince Russia."

Will Aspiring Tsar Vladimir Putin agree to pause his war, even if Ukraine agrees to cede some territory? "We do not rule out contacts with US representatives over the next few days," the Russian foreign ministry responded. "A ceasefire isn't what we need," far-right ideologue Alexander Dugin wrote, summarizing the view of hawkish Russian imperialists.

It's not clear if the entire Trump administration is behind the deal brokered by Rubio. Nazi-saluting oligarch and DOGE mastermind Elon Musk yesterday called Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, a decorated Navy pilot and NASA astronaut, "a traitor" after Kelly posted on X about his most recent visit to Ukraine and wrote, "Everyone wants this war to end, but any agreement has to protect Ukraine's security and can't be a giveaway to Putin." And interim Washington, DC US attorney Ed Martin hounded Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman about a company he founded with his brother Alexander to assist in Ukraine's defense, part of a disturbing lawfare campaign a Vindman spokesperson dismissed as "a far-right conspiracy theory" and retaliation for the Vindman brothers' role in Trump's first impeachment.

Meanwhile in France, the chiefs of staff of more than 30 countries' armed forces – mostly European but also including Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and Turkey – convened with President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the formation of a multinational force to monitor any ceasefire in Ukraine, the New York Times reports. And in Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced plans to double the ranks of its military, propelled by fears that Russia may strike beyond Ukraine.
