THE BIG NEWS

North Pacific Quake Triggers Tsunami; Waves Hit US West Coast, Japan, Russia, and Elsewhere

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the top 10 strongest on record, struck the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka region yesterday. The quake damaged buildings in far eastern Russia, which was also hit by tsunami waves that swept away buildings. The quake also triggered tsunami advisories, watches, and warnings across the entire US West Coast and parts of Alaska.

Hawaii came early in the tsunami's path. Residents were told to seek high ground. "Don't, don't, don't go down to the beach," Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi urged. No damage was reported in the first hour after the waves struck, but Hawaii Democratic Gov. Josh Green said "significant damage" was expected. Flights bound for Hawaii changed course in midair as airports on the islands closed.

In French Polynesia, a wave came in at 13 feet high.

In Japan, the Fukushima nuclear plant, which melted down following a tsunami in 2011, was evacuated. The government told nearly 2 million people across the country to evacuate, and warned that major tsunamis could be expected for more than a day after the quake. That goes for elsewhere, as well.

Waves began to hit California, Oregon, and Washington State overnight. Coastal residents under tsunami warnings were urged to seek higher ground on foot to avoid creating traffic jams. Most of California's coastline was expected to see waves under two feet, but parts of far northern California were forecast to see waves of more than five feet.

As of this morning, the waves that made land in the US were not as bad as the worst-case scenario in the forecasts – but the coasts aren't clear yet. Other countries, including China, the Philippines, and Indonesia also sounded the alarm yesterday, but advisories in many places have since been downgraded or rescinded. Casualties have fortunately been minimal.

Consult local news sources for the latest updates if you're in a coastal area under watch.

Loomer Strikes Again: FDA Scientist Forced Out

Not content with her role as Donald Trump's unofficial national security adviser, the crackpot MAGA influencer Laura Loomer has expanded her portfolio to assess the loyalty of basically anyone who works for the US government. The New York Times and the Washington Post report that a Loomer pressure campaign forced the resignation of the Food and Drug Administration's top vaccine and gene therapy official, Dr. Vinay Prasad, described by FDA commissioner Marty Makary as an "impeccable scientist." Even Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could not save Prasad once he was in Loomer's sights. Describing himself as "a Bernie Sanders liberal" on social media may have sealed Prasad's fate. Per the Times, Loomer was also mixed up in the recent firing of a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles.

PARTING WORDS

"There's a lot of us in this caucus that want to f-cking fight, and what's bothering me right now is we don't see enough fight in this caucus."

-- New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, speaking to reporters yesterday after grandstanding on the Senate floor over a move by two colleagues, Sens. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, to quickly pass bipartisan bills that Booker claimed would cut funding for police in his district and favor law enforcement in Republican states. Cortez Masto and Klobuchar pointed out that Booker could have raised his objections when the bills were in committee instead of waiting until he could seize the spotlight to, in his words, stand "for my police officers."
