THE BIG NEWS

Trump on Iran War: The End Is the Beginning

This is how empires fall. Not only has Donald Trump been unable to explain why he launched a war on Iran with Israel – and not only do he and his Republican cronies insist it isn't actually a war – now that the war is underway and sending shockwaves through the global economy, he can't say when and on what terms it might end.

"I think the war is very complete, pretty much," he told CBS News.

"We've already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough," he told Republican lawmakers in Florida, per the New York Times. "We go forward more determined than ever to achieve ultimate victory that will end this long-running danger once and for all."

"How good is our military, right? Amazing. How good? Short term. Short term," he added.

In response to reporter's questions, he said the war is "both" coming to an end and just beginning. And later in the day, Trump promised an expanded and almost certainly criminal campaign. "We will take out easily destroyable targets that will make it virtually impossible for Iran to ever be built back, as a Nation, again — Death, Fire, and Fury will reign upon them — But I hope, and pray, that it does not happen!" he wrote on Truth Social.

The skyrocketing price of oil and its economic side effects seem to be what rattled Trump. His muddled suggestion that the war might end soon sent crude oil prices back down, but there's no guarantee they'll stay that way. Experts are concerned about dreaded "stagflation" bringing down the global economy. Nicholas Mulder, an economic historian of wars, tells the Associated Press that "this is already the largest oil supply shock ever."

But at least some people are finding opportunities in all the pointless bloodshed. The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump's sons Eric and Don Jr. are investing in a new drone company that hopes to win Pentagon contracts.
