Trump's Priorities Spell Doom for GOP - the Wednesday AM Quickie 3/11/26

A new poll shows that most Americans want nothing to do with AI, with only 26 percent of voters saying they have positive feelings about Silicon Valley's latest job-killing scheme. Keep it up, folks, constantly making fun of the slop-peddlers seems to be working. Let's pop that bubble! - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

Trump Sets Up House and Senate GOP for Midterms Collapse

Donald Trump's recklessness, selfishness, and ineptitude have driven new wedges between himself and his formerly obedient Republican underlings in Congress. This week House GOP members have decamped to Trump's Doral resort in Florida for a policy retreat. The thing is, Trump has dictated that no Republican policy priorities will be passed into law until Congress approves his voter suppression bill, perversely dubbed the SAVE America Act. Politico reports that Budding Theocrat House Speaker Mike Johnson and other party leaders are fobbing off Trump's priority bill onto the Senate, where it will fail. "That is just a function of math," Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters yesterday.

This is good news. And it gets better. "If we don't pass the SAVE America Act, the GOP will lose the House and Senate," Mark Meadows, who was Trump's White House chief of staff for a while in his first term, warns, per HuffPost. As I wrote recently in this newsletter, Trump is leaving Republicans nothing to run on. They're in panic mode about Trump's unpopular war on Iran and his equally unpopular mass deportation program.

That said, Trump hasn't yet lost his sway over the party. Yesterday in Georgia, the candidate he endorsed to replace Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, Clay Fuller, advanced to the November runoff, where he will face Democrat, cattle farmer, and retired US Army officer Shawn Harris.

Meanwhile in Mississippi, Democratic primary voters opted to retain 78-year-old, 17-term Rep. Bennie Thompson over two younger challengers, Evan Turnage and Pertis Herman Williams III. Thompson led the Jan. 6 investigation into Trump's 2021 coup attempt. God willing he'll get to vote on Trump's third impeachment.

Senate Advances Bipartisan Housing Bill

Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who head up the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, co-sponsored a bill to address the country's housing affordability crisis. According to the New York Times, the legislation "would streamline production, modernize federal programs, improve financing options, ease regulations and set limits on large institutional investors."

Yesterday senators voted 89-9 to advance the bill, and a vote to approve it could come as soon as today. But Politico reports that industry groups are lobbying against a provision in the bill that would ban large investors from buying up single-family homes. And even if the bill passes the House, Donald Trump has vowed not to sign off on anything until he gets his voter suppression law passed. Business as usual!

That's how many places the United States fell last year in a ranking of press freedom across the Americas, from fourth to eleventh, Al Jazeera reports. The Inter American Press Association's report blames the "alarming decline" of US press freedom on Donald Trump, the "stigmatisation of critical journalism," and "government actions aimed at limiting free expression and access to information."

Trump GRILLED Over His Lies About Bombed Iranian Girls School

Lies upon lies upon lies.

PARTING WORDS

"The attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel are unraveling international law, the Geneva Conventions and the legitimacy of the United Nations. This is extremely dangerous for the future of the planet and humanity. ...
"After the horrors of World War II, the international community came together to establish international law — a system of rules designed to prevent aggressive wars and hold nations accountable for violating basic human rights. Trump and Netanyahu are destroying that effort and are pushing the global community back into international anarchy — a world that produced 10 million dead in World War I and 50 million dead in World War II.
"We cannot go back to a world where might makes right — where any nation can invade, bomb or destabilize another country for any reason they choose. That mentality leaves all of us, and future generations, increasingly unsafe."

-- Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, in a statement yesterday denouncing "Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu's efforts to unravel international law."
