Trump's Hateful Lies Inspire Bomb Threats in Ohio - The Friday AM Quickie 9/13/24

I've said it before and I'll say it again: a billionaire can spend hundreds of millions of dollars to go on a private space jaunt and pose for the world's most expensive Instagram photos, but that doesn't mean they'd hack it as a real NASA astronaut. I refuse to be impressed! - Corey

NYPD Commish Edward Caban Resigns Amid FBI Probe, Shakedown Allegations

With no fewer than four federal criminal investigations into the administration and campaign of New York City Mayor-Cop Eric Adams, and no charges yet filed, it can be hard to keep track of the who's, what's, and how's of all the corruption in his orbit, especially since many of those implicated are either blood relatives or romantically involved. But New York's NBC affiliate News 4 yesterday broke a story that shows city leaders aren't above an old-fashioned mafia-style shakedown: A Brooklyn bar owner, Shamel Kelly, says an Adams City Hall staffer, Ray Martin, told him to pay off the identical twin brother of New York Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban, James Caban, at least $2,500 to stay in business or else get shut down. Phone records back up the bar owner's story. Although the NYPD fired him for misconduct in 2001, James Caban today has an NYPD security detail. Federal investigators seized Edward Caban's phone last week; yesterday he resigned as head of the NYPD, saying he had "created a distraction." "I wish him well," Adams said. The new interim commissioner is Thomas Donlon, a retired FBI official. The City reports that despite the federal probe targeting top NYPD leaders, the Adams administration "is moving to embed NYPD members into other city agencies," with responsibilities including "permit enforcement." Hmm.

Putin Threatens Escalation Over Ukraine Missile Plan

Is he bluffing? Since Russia invaded Ukraine, White House national security advisers have made the case that Aspiring Tsar Vladimir Putin's threats to escalate the war, either by launching nuclear weapons or attacking more countries, are hollow, and meant only to discourage Ukraine's allies. We'll see, I guess. After meeting at the White House today, President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range missiles supplied by the two countries and permit them to target military sites deep inside Russia. Putin yesterday tried to discourage that decision with another threat. He told state TV that Ukrainian strikes in Russian territory with long-range missiles supplied by NATO would mean the US and European countries are "fighting" Russia "directly," which would change "the very essence" of the conflict and force him to "make appropriate decisions." US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, meanwhile, was in Warsaw to discuss the "security of Poland's eastern flank" with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Russia's counterattack in Kursk is underway.
