THE BIG NEWS

Trump Stealing Greenland’s Oil, Plans to Drill in Protected Wetland

A new Trump-affiliated oil company installed its equipment on Greenland and is preparing to drill for oil in a fragile and protected wetland, despite having zero permission to do so, the Guardian reported. Executives of the Texas-based Greenland Oil, which they founded last year, will spend $60 million drilling two wells on Nunap Qeqqa, an eastern peninsula known in English as “Jameson Land.” The area the company plans to drill appears “to fall within a conservation area protected by the Ramsar convention on wetlands.” But that doesn’t matter to Greenland Energy, because executives think there’s $1 trillion worth of crude there.

Greenland is a semiautonomous Danish territory and its local elected leaders decide what to do with its natural resources. The government of Greenland – Naalakkersuisut – said it “would not be proportionate” to demand the company remove its equipment and said it is processing its drilling application.  In the meantime, Greenland Energy is acting like it already has permission. Executives scheduled a vessel carrying 300 shipping containers of drilling equipment to leave Canada on Sept. 12 and for drilling to begin the following month. According to Trump’s far-right Greenland envoy, former Louisiana governor Jeff Landry, the company will begin pumping oil next year.

Greenland Energy is full of Trump’s cronies. Per the Guardian:

Greenland Energy has retained Phil McGraw, better known as Dr Phil, a prominent rightwing former chatshow host who served on Trump’s religious freedom commission, to make a documentary series that will “capture the mission of these modern-day wildcatters”.
It has also appointed as a director a US navy veteran who is working on Golden Dome, the missile defence plan for which Trump says controlling Greenland is “vital”.
Larry Swets, Greenland Energy’s chair and a big shareholder, appears to enjoy access to Trump’s circle. He has said the oil project is “not related to American annexation”.
After a company representative falsely claimed at a Jameson Land community meeting in June that it had permission to land drilling equipment, Swets said: “Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion.”
But the next month, local people in the sparsely populated region noticed a tug pulling a barge shorewards and unloading a dozen containers. “The goal was to get the equipment onshore at Nunap Qeqqa [Jameson Land] in connection with planned oil exploration drilling,” the Greenland government’s statement said.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey Sign Defense Pact

The three nations signed a NATO-style mutual defense pact stipulating that an attack on one “shall be regarded as an attack against them all,” the AP and CNN reported. The “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement” between the three of the most powerful actors in the region “brings together the oil-rich Saudi Arabia and nuclear power Pakistan as well as Turkey, which is NATO’s second-largest army and a rapidly growing defense industry. It would increase cooperation and deterrence at a time of increased regional uncertainty and threats from the war with Iran.”

A Turkish official told CNN that the agreement is “purely defensive” and should not be taken as an aggression against any particular country. Iran does not see it that way, and remarked that Saudi Arabia should not think the “paper agreement” will bring them security, “just as decades of one-sided dependence on the Americans failed to do,” Iranian parliament member Ebrahim Rezaei, and member of its National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on social media.

Puerto Rico Rations Water as Drought Worsens Crisis

Authorities began a new system to conserve water on Friday, following Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón’s declaration of an island-wide state of emergency earlier last week, the NYT reported. The program will shut off water in parts of San Juan and surrounding areas for rotating 48-hour periods; González-Colón is also urging everyone to limit hosing down driveways, washing cars and watering plants. The ration comes after a major water pipeline broke in June, which interrupted service throughout the metropolitan area. The pipeline has since been fixed, but interruptions have not only continued, they’ve worsened under extremely dry conditions. More than half the archipelago is under moderate to extreme drought conditions; July in San Juan was the driest it’s been in 100 years.

PARTING WORDS

“We are aware of no instance in American history in which a President unilaterally and using privately collected funds demolished substantial portions of the White House that Congress authorized to be built and American taxpayers paid for. Until now.”

– Judges Patricia Millett and Brad Garcia, writing in the majority opinion for an appeals court ruling on Friday ordering Trump to halt aboveground construction on his ballroom/führerbunker project because he lacks Congressional approval, the AP and the WSJ reported.
