THE BIG NEWS

US and Israel Diverge on Iran War Aims

How much daylight is there between Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as they wage a joint war on Iran? If you listen to leaders of the Trump regime, there's more all the time.

"The objectives that have been laid out by the president are different from the objectives that have been laid out by the Israelis," Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testified to the House yesterday. CIA Director John Ratcliffe concurred, testifying that Trump's "objectives with respect to Operation Epic Fury did not include regime change. That may be different from what Israel's objectives were."

The comments followed a wild Truth Social post by Trump in which he claimed the US "knew nothing" about Israel's attack on a massive Iranian natural gas field and said "NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field." Trump repeated those comments at the White House yesterday, and Netanyahu subsequently confirmed that Israel "acted alone."

The Israeli attack prompted a wave of strikes by Iran on energy facilities across the region. The escalation sent oil prices spiraling upward again as analysts fear an economic "nightmare scenario."

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres tells Politico the attacks on civilian infrastructure suggest war crimes may have been committed on both sides. "The war needs to stop," he added, "and I believe that it is in the hands of the US to make it stop."

About that: Trump claimed again yesterday that he won't involve US ground troops in the war, but he also told the reporter who asked about it that "if I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you." Despite Trump's assurances, Reuters reports that the Pentagon may send additional troops to join the 50,000 already deployed to the Middle East. With Trump flailing for lack of a strategy, Netanyahu may indeed be the decider when it comes to the course of this war.

Japan's New Far-Right Prime Minister Promises Trump Help with Iran War

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made a chummy appearance with Donald Trump at the White House yesterday and pledged vague help for US efforts to reopen the Straight of Hormuz, the vital oil shipping waterway under Iranian control. "They are really stepping up to the plate," Trump said, "unlike NATO." As Politico reports, six US allies led by the UK and including Japan "issued a carefully calibrated statement" that "short of committing to any specific allocation of military resources" and seem to be "largely an attempt to placate Trump."

The meeting generated an entirely different set of headlines thanks to a racist "joke" from Trump. A Japanese reporter asked, "Why didn't you tell US allies in Europe and Asia and Japan about the war before attacking Iran?" Trump replied: "Because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? OK, why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" Takaichi's eyes widened as she shifted in her seat, took a deep breath, and said nothing.
