Trump Endorses Ethnic 'Cleaning' of Gaza
Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking 80 years since the Allies liberated the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. Jewish Currents reports that the field of genocide studies, which "owes its existence to a surge of Holocaust scholarship," risks collapse due to the conspicuous silence of many institutions on Israel's mass killing of Palestinians in Gaza.
But the leader of the United States is anything but silent. On Saturday, he spoke in chilling terms about the future of displaced Palestinian civilians.
Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he wanted Palestinians from Gaza to be forcibly relocated to Jordan and Egypt. "You're talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing," Trump said.
Who knows whether he meant to do it, but the phrase "clean out" clearly echoes the term "ethnic cleansing," a practice of forcing groups of people to move under the barrel of a gun, a horrific practice that exists on a legal continuum with genocide.
As CNN notes, the real estate tycoon-turned-wannabe dictator has previously said "he 'might' be able to have a role in rebuilding Gaza, praising it as having a 'phenomenal location, on the sea' and 'the best weather.'" Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who wants Jewish settlers to take over Gaza, called Trump's proposal "an excellent idea" and praised his "out-of-the-box thinking."
But Egypt and Jordan are not keen on Trump's idea, the Associated Press reports. The temporary or long-term transfer of Palestinians "risks expanding the conflict in the region and undermines prospects of peace and coexistence among its people," Egypt's foreign ministry warns.
"Ethnic cleansing is anything but an 'out-of-the-box' thinking, no matter how one packages it," Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, wrote in response to Trump and Smotrich. " It is illegal, immoral and irresponsible."

Inshallah Hegseth will prove too incompetent to do too much damage. On Saturday, Senators voted 59-34 to confirm puppy-killing former South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary. Wannabe Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., will appear before the Senate Finance Committee for his first confirmation hearing on Wednesday. As the Washington Post and Politico report, Congressional Democrats have yet to settle on a strategy to confront the Trump administration – disagreeing even on whether confront Trump at all.
