Ukraine Takes the Fight to Russia, with US Weapons

For months, Ukraine's military has been struggling to hold ground in the country's east against Russian invaders. Three days ago, in a risky surprise attack, a significant Ukrainian ground force crossed some six miles over the Russian border, seizing villages and a gas export station in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian raid employed armored vehicles supplied by the US, which the State Department says is "not in violation" of US policy over how its weapons can be used. Ukraine has said little about the operation and its strategic purpose is a mystery to outside military experts; however, some speculate that it may have been intended to boost morale and encourage allies, demonstrating that Aspiring Tsar Vladimir "Putin's 'red lines' are only words and that Russia is not as strong as some make out." It may also, Ukrainian presidential advisers suggest, improve the country's position during future negotiations to end the war. A fuming Putin grilled military commanders in a video call broadcast yesterday; all appeared to have been caught unprepared. Russian authorities claim at leave five civilians have been killed and 66 injured. The latest reports suggest Ukrainian forces are pressing deeper into Russian territory.

"I was like, 'I think I've been drinking poison.'"

-- Keyry Broncano, 23, recalling the moment in middle school when she learned she'd been drinking lead-tainted water since kindergarten from the taps in the East Ramapo Central School District north of New York City. As the Washington Post reports, there is no nationwide law or rule requiring schools to test drinking water, and only 18 states have such a requirement.
