THE BIG NEWS

Trump Drops Iran War Rebranding After One Day

It's hard to believe anything that Donald Trump or his regime lackeys say about the war on Iran, in no small part because what they say they're doing changes by the day and the hour. "On the morning of April 1, he told reporters the war would be over within three days," the Washington Post says in an illustrated effort to untangle the knot of lies. "Hours later, in a prime-time address to the nation, he vowed to attack Iran 'extremely hard' over the next two to three weeks," but those attacks never happened. So much the better.

But the regime's lies get even harder to believe all the time. Yesterday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the war – excuse me, "Operation Epic Fury" – "is concluded," even though the Iranian and US militaries were still shooting at each other. In its place, the US would be launching "Project Freedom," an effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz that would be "defensive in nature, focused in scope and temporary in duration," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said. "We're not allowing ourselves to get distracted," he added.

Sorry, what was that? Trump yesterday said Project Freedom will be "paused for a short period" at the request of Pakistan and "other countries." The Post reports that "US Central Command, which is responsible for the transit clearing and the ongoing blockade, referred questions on the pause back to the White House." Which tells you exactly where the responsibility for this systemic dysfunction rests.

It seems Trump wants the war he started to end, and soon. But he's absolutely not in control of the situation, and experts say Iranian leaders know that prolonging this situation, in which the limits of US military power have become devastatingly clear, is to their advantage. Now Trump regime officials are begging China for help. Sad.

After his quick-and-dirty raid on Venezuela, Trump thought he could chalk up another easy win to burnish his legacy as a wartime leader. Instead, he's hastening the end of American empire.

SOME NUMBER

$1 billion

That's how much Senate Republicans want to spend on "Secret Service enhancements" for Donald Trump's White House ballroom boondoggle, the Washington Post reports. Trump has claimed the project, which includes an underground bunker, would use "no government funds."

Secret Service officers shot a man who shot at them Monday near the White House; a nearby child was wounded. Meanwhile, a federal grand jury indicted Cole Tomas Allen, the man who stormed the White House correspondents' dinner, with additional charges, including the attempted assassination of Trump; he faces up to life in prison.

PARTING WORDS

"I must say that I consider the phrase tax the rich — quote tax the rich — when spit out with anger and contempt by politicians both here and across the country, to be just as hateful as some disgusting racial slurs, and even the phrase 'from the river to the sea.'"

-- New York real estate baron Steve Roth, likening common progressive policy positions to hate speech in an earnings call yesterday, as reported by Politico. Roth also, predictably, denounced New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and said, with no hint of self-awareness, that "the ultra-rich should be 'praised and thanked'" by ordinary people.
