THE BIG NEWS

More Republicans Break with Trump Over Epstein Coverup

Donald Trump continues to lose support from his own party over his regime's bungling coverup of what the government knows about the late serial sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Budding Theocrat House Speaker Mike Johnson told Russia-backed podcaster Benny Johnson yesterday that the Justice Department should release everything it knows about Epstein in the name of "transparency."

"It's a very delicate subject, but you should put everything out there, let the people decide it," Speaker Johnson said. What makes it a delicate subject? Perhaps the fact that Epstein, before he died, said he was Trump's closest friend – a friendship that's documented by photographs, by Trump's past praise of Epstein as a "terrific guy," and, perhaps in greater detail in official papers yet to be seen by the public. Despite his comments, Johnson opposed a Democratic motion yesterday that would set up a House vote to release the Epstein files.

Although the scandal is of Trump's own making, some of the Republican criticism is falling on his flunkies, including Attorney General Pam Bondi and hapless FBI deputy director Dan Bongino, whose whereabouts are something of a mystery. This has put some Democrats in the awkward position of defending Bondi lest she serve as a scapegoat to rescue Trump from a scandal of his own making. Live by the Qanon, die by the Qanon.

A clearly frustrated Trump said yesterday "these files were made up" by Barack Obama and "the Biden." He also said Bondi should release "whatever she thinks is credible" – presumably meaning anything that implicates Democrats while leaving him out of it. What he and Johnson are proposing is not transparency but what's known as a limited hangout.

Finally, Wired reports that the Justice Department and FBI's release of what they called the "full raw" surveillance video from the prison where Epstein died is missing nearly three minutes of footage. It's probably nothing, right?

Trump Regime Inserts Broken AI Into Government Decisions

The Washington Post reports that even though Nazi-saluting oligarch Elon Musk has departed from government, the Trump regime's enthusiasm for so-called artificial intelligence has not waned. In part to make up for the regime's sweeping cuts to the federal workforce, agencies are attempting to use unproven AI technology to automate tasks and decision-making that formerly fell to humans. AI is being used to replace IRS auditors and TSA security screeners, as well as for matters of life and death including air traffic control and military target selection. Musk's xAI this week won a Pentagon contract; the company's Grok chatbot recently made headlines for proclaiming itself to be "MechaHitler."

Meanwhile in China, the New York Times reports that the government is treating AI as a matter of industrial policy, with tens of billions of dollars worth of state support for the technology at all levels, from engineer training to data center construction. Where's the opt-out button, please?

Establishment Seizes on Arizona Primary Result to Declare Mamdani Mania Over

Politicians and journalists are looking to the candidacy of democratic socialist and Democratic Party nominee for mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, as a national bellwether. Mamdani met yesterday with city business executives and reassured them he would "discourage" others from using the phrase "globalize the intifada" to express support for Palestinian rights; he never used that language despite attempts by his opponents to tie it to him. His independent opponent, Andrew Cuomo, is attempting a "a how-do-you-do-fellow-kids copycat of Mamdani," Politico reports, reflective of the misguided centrist belief that Mamdani's success owes mostly to his social media flair, as opposed to his leftist policies and promises to increase affordability.

That's the same self-serving logic the establishment is applying to last night's victory of Adelita Grijalva, the eldest daughter of the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva, in an Arizona Democratic primary. Grijalva beat multiple opponents including Deja Foxx, a 25-year-old activist who ran a social media-heavy campaign. The New York Times went so far as to proclaim that "the Mamdani momentum withered in the deserts of southern Arizona on Tuesday night." Wishful thinking, hm? As HuffPost notes, Grijalva had the endorsement of both Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Squad Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

SOME NUMBER

$85,000

That's how much Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills owes in unpaid rent on his $20,833-a-month Washington, DC penthouse apartment, according to a lawsuit filed by the landlord. As the Washington Post reports, Mills, whose Congressional salary of $174,000 would not cover his rent, previously worked as a military contractor, and faced a referral last year to the House ethics office for misrepresentations in his financial disclosures.

"A post-colonial, independent nation such as ours should not be treated as a dumping ground for ideological firebrands and partisan influencers."
