THE BIG NEWS

Trump Sells Out Zelenskyy For Diesel Deal With Putin

The first in this weekend’s series of betrayals came on Friday, when Trump agreed to buy diesel from Russia. It was a move so outrageous that news outlets dropped the artifice of Both Sides and called it out directly. The Associated Press said it was “shocking,” the New York Times said it would undercut US sanctions, and the Wall Street Journal linked it to Trump’s “hopes of lowering domestic fuel prices ahead of the midterm elections.”

The amount Aspiring Tsar Vladimir Putin intends to sell will barely make a difference in the market, the outlets reported, but it would give him more leverage in his war on Ukraine. The news that Trump was doing business with Ukraine’s enemy came as Ukrainian delegates were in Miami to meet with US officials to discuss ending Russia’s war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the deal a “gift” to Russia, one that will allow Putin to “kill more, wage war for longer.”

Within hours, Putin did just that. His military unleashed hell on a residential area in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, using several powerful glide bombs in an attack that killed at least 20 people, including four children, injured 16 more, leveled an apartment building and caused large-scale power outages, ABC News, the Guardian and Kyiv Post reported.

The next betrayal came Saturday, when Trump said Ukraine should get a new president, the Associated Press and the Guardian reported. Trump claimed Zelenskyy has failed to do enough to end the war with Russia, falsely implied that Zelenskyy started it, and falsely blamed him for skyrocketing diesel prices in the US, which are Trump’s fault.

And last but not least, a third betrayal, reported on Sunday. According to the Financial Times, Trump is threatening to block arms for Ukraine and cut off intelligence sharing unless Ukraine stops bombing Russian oil refineries.

Four Republican senators and two Democratic senators are protesting the deal, the AP reported Sunday, saying Trump failed to notify Congress or offer any explanation, as the law requires, and demanding he “immediately reverse course.”

Meanwhile, Russia is redoubling its efforts to assassinate chief executives and senior employees at European defense companies, especially ones related to drone manufacturing, the Financial Times reported in a separate story. Per the FT:

With progress on the battlefield deadlocked in Ukraine and Russia’s economy struggling, the Kremlin has ordered an expansion of sabotage and “hybrid” operations in Europe as it seeks to fatally weaken support for Kyiv in the coming months.

Assassinations against European civilian targets — once considered taboo, even by Russia’s spy agencies — are an increasingly prominent part of those plans, European intelligence services have told the FT.

Cockroach Movement Leaders Released From Custody After Police Violently Suppress Protest

Three months ago, India’s youth-led “Cockroach” movement protesters won most major demands from Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s fascist government, including the resignation of the education minister and compensation for families of students who killed themselves over the government’s education exam failures. That was then. This weekend, the government’s security forces used “an extraordinary show of force” against them, the Associated Press and the New York Times reported, in an effort to violently crush their objections to the government’s politically motivated purge of voter rolls. Gen Z protesters had been planning to turn out en masse to demand an end to that project, which started last summer and has kicked 130 million names off the voter roll. They also want Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. The three leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party – Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka – had intended to lead thousands in that protest on Saturday. Instead, authorities preemptively arrested the leaders and attempted to violently suppress everyone else. Per the NYT:

Throughout the day, thousands of people, mostly in their 20s and 30s, tried to gather in Delhi to protest a sweeping revision of their country’s voter roll. Security forces hauled them away, sometimes grabbing them by their arms and legs, and stuffed them, often forcefully, into buses and vans.

Those detained banged on the doors of police vans. They shouted from the windows of buses. One police officer was seen grabbing a protester by the throat. By early evening, more than 2,000 people had been detained, according to a lawyers’ group providing legal aid to the detainees, though an exact number was impossible to ascertain.

The government cancelled trains, closed subway stations and switched off the internet in New Delhi. On Sunday, authorities released the three leaders after they promised to avoid breaking the peace for one year. Right after they got out, they promised to continue peacefully protesting. One posted a message on social media: “The CJP will neither back down nor be intimidated.” A message on their official party account was righteous, too: “Cockroaches never die.” Respect and solidarity forever to all the protesters.

Houthis Attack Saudi Arabia’s Main International Airport Twice in Two Days, 14 People Dead

Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for both missile attacks on the airport in Riyadh, according to Al Jazeera, NBC News, and the Washington Post. The strike on Saturday killed 13 people and injured more than 300 others; the strike on Sunday killed one Pakistani national and injured 11 more. Attackers also hit Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport. Trump said Saturday that he was considering joining Saudi Arabia’s military operations against the Houthis. “We may. We’re gonna look at it,” he said. “We just found out about the recent attack. So we’ll make a decision. We move very quickly.”
