Bernie Sanders: Don't Murder CEOs, Organize

Vermont socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders tells Jacobin that the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, allegedly by the privileged but suffering 26-year-old Maryland prep school and Ivy League grad Luigi Mangione, showed that "many, many people are furious at the health insurance companies who make huge profits denying them and their families the health care that they desperately need."

Sixty thousand people a year die because they don’t get to a doctor when they should. Sixty thousand people! ...
The murder is absolutely abhorrent. We are not going to reform the health care system by killing people. The way we're going to bring about the kind of fundamental changes we need in health care is, in fact, by a political movement which understands the government has got to represent all of us, not just the 1 percent. And absolutely at the very top of that list is the understanding that health care is a human right. ...
Imagine if you had a political party that said that.

Democrats still aren't sure they want to be that party, per Politico. But some, like Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, see "an opportunity, because now people are talking about health care and to talk about the fact that this industry has honestly not been as helpful as it could be."

Meanwhile, New York police claim they have "no indication" Mangione was ever insured by United Healthcare. Mangione's defense lawyer, Thomas Dickey, says he hasn't "seen any evidence that says that he's the shooter."

Triumphant Syrian Rebels Seek US Recognition

The political wing of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, the Islamist rebel group now taking control of Syria after defeating the Assad regime, has offered to "cooperate directly" with the US to search for American journalist Austin Tice, who went missing there 12 years ago. "We're obviously pleased with anyone that's making a concerted effort" to find Austin, his father Marc Tice tells the Washington Post. "I would be hopeful that the US government would accept that offer." But the Biden administration has only been in indirect communication with HTS, which the US considers a terrorist group. HTS freed another American, Travis Pete Timmerman, from a Syrian prison this week. Syrian families, of course, are also searching for loved ones disappeared by the deposed government. International arms control experts, meanwhile, are wondering where they might find hundreds of tons of banned chemical weapons produced under the Assad family's long reign. And US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told reporters yesterday that Israel's seizure of territory in Syria is "a temporary move," although United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres does not seem convinced.

SOME NUMBER

15 percent

That's the share of US teens in a new Pew survey who say they use YouTube "almost constantly." One-third of teens say they use either YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook almost constantly. But YouTube remains the most popular digital platform for young people, with 75 percent of teens reporting daily use. Austrailia recently passed a ban on social media use for kids under 16, "an ambitious social experiment" that raises free speech concerns.

PARTING WORDS

"There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there's no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States."

-- Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh, responding to wild claims by New Jersey Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who claimed to have "very high sources," that the mystery "drones" seen over New Jersey and New York were being launched by a supposed Iranian "mothership" off the US East Coast. White House spokesman John Kirby yesterday told reporters that law enforcement was unable to corroborate the sightings, some captured on video, but nonetheless concluded the so-called drones were "actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully." Democratic Sens. Cory Booker and Andy Kim of New Jersey and Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York have demanded a briefing from the heads of the FBI, the FAA, and Homeland Security on the unidentified, or perhaps identified but classified, flying objects.
