Leftist Insurgents Are Remaking the Democratic Party - The Friday AM Quickie 9/5/25

Congrats to Donald Trump's Dr. Feelgood, Ronny Jackson, who had his demotion by the US Navy reversed. What's the point of being an admiral posted to the White House if you can't drink on the job? Here's hoping he soon gets back to giving Trump the best medical care blind loyalty can provide. Anyway, I'm out, and Whitney's back Monday. - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

Justice Democrats Hopes to Primary AIPAC-Backed California Rep. Jimmy Gomez and Grow the Squad

The Squad could gain a new member from Los Angeles, if Angela Gonzales-Torres succeeds in her campaign to unseat incumbent Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez. Justice Democrats, the leftist PAC that helped get New York Squad Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez elected, among others, yesterday announced its support for Gonzales-Torres, a 30-year-old community activist and former neighborhood council president.

Gomez, 50, a former union organizer, spoke at Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders' "Fighting Oligarcy" tour stop in LA. But some of the positions he's taken have riled the leftist coalition. Gonzales-Torres tells the LA Times that she's running against Gomez because he took $2.3 million from AIPAC then declined to co-sponsor a bill calling for a ceasefire in Gaza; and because he took $500,000 from crypto lobbyists before "voting to further Trump's corrupt crypto agenda."

"Angela is exactly what Los Angeles needs in Congress right now: a working-class champion with the moral courage to not only fight back against the Trump administration’s cruelty with the urgency it demands but also take on the Democratic Party when the corporate establishment fails to fight for our communities," Justice Democrats director Alexandra Rojas says.

Meanwhile, a Democratic strategy memo obtained by Politico says voters prefer populist messages about increasing affordability – in the vein of New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani – over the deregulatory, corporate-friendly "Abundance" agenda promoted by centrist writers like Ezra Klein. The strategists behind the memo, who include two former Kamala Harris campaign advisers, briefed Capitol Hill staffers and party operatives this week.

"'All the noise around 'Abundance' is pretty loud, so it's important for people to know that it's not the only path forward for Democrats and to know what data looks like to back that up,' said a person who attended the briefing and granted anonymity to discuss a private event. 'There’s data to back up a populist message.'"

While the media's focus ahead of next year's midterm elections has been on the disturbing nationwide gerrymandering efforts kicked off by Donald Trump, the sleeper story of the season is how leftist candidates and messages are making gains not seen in the US since the 1970s.

RFK Jr. Croaks His Way Through Fiery Senate Hearing

Donald Trump and Vice Henchman JD Vance defended their wholly unqualified Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he endured a prolonged grilling at a Senate Finance Committee hearing yesterday. But the hearing showed that even Republicans are starting to wonder whether putting a wild-eyed antivax quack in charge of vital health agencies was the brightest idea. "Vaccines save lives. If we're going to make America healthy again, we can't allow public health to be undermined," GOP Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming told Kennedy, who just oversaw a purge of top scientific expertise at the Centers for Disease Control at Prevention. Per NBC News, Congressional Republicans saw polling before the hearing saying most Trump voters support vaccines. The New York Times reports that RFK Jr. is planning to gin up his own polling to justify his war on science and medicine.

Democrats were even tougher on Kennedy yesterday. "Sir, you're a charlatan. That's what you are," Washington State Sen. Maria Cantwell said. Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock called him a "hazard to the health of the American people." And Virginia Sen. Mark Warner angrily called him "ignorant." If only they brought this energy to confirmation hearings!

Ominous: Trump Renames DOD 'Department of War'

Donald Trump is set to sign an order today renaming the Department of Defense – which took the name after defeating fascist aggression in World War II – to the US Army's historical moniker, the Department of War. Because it's less "woke," you see. You could argue the new (old) name is more honest about the business of American imperialism, but it also betrays a troubling willingness by Trump and his War Secretary, Pete Hegseth, to launch unprovoked attacks on other countries, not to mention bomb defenseless civilians at sea, at a time when US troops are intimidating innocent Americans as they walk the streets of their home cities. "Defense is too defensive," Trump said last month, per the New York Times. "And we want to be defensive, but we want to be offensive too if we have to be."

Meanwhile, Squad Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Delia Ramirez of Illinois denounced Trump's "lawless and reckless" attack on a boat off the coast of Venezuela, which Omar called a "clear violation" of international law. "From Iran to Venezuela, to DC, LA, and Chicago, Trump continues to abuse our military power, undermine the rule of law, and erode our constitutional boundaries in political spectacles," Ramirez said, per Common Dreams.

SOME NUMBER

82 degrees Fahrenheit

That's the maximum indoor temperature of a rental unit in Los Angeles under new rules adopted by county supervisors and city councilors, the Los Angeles Times reports. The new regulation effectively requires landlords to install air conditioning. The California Department of Housing and Community Development is also urging state lawmakers to adopt this health standard statewide.

"Innovations of first-generation humanoids, factory automination [sic], and autonomous vehicles have surged from private sector investment. Every one of these advancements is powered by AI. The robots are here. ...
"But as leaders and parents we must manage AI's growth responsibly. During this primitive stage, it is our duty to treat AI as we would our own children – empowering, but with watchful guidance."
