THE BIG NEWS

Senate Votes Today on Whether to Limit Arms to Israel

Capitol police arrested at least 44 anti-genocide protesters yesterday inside the Philip A. Hart Senate Office Building. The protesters, who reportedly included "members of faith groups, moms, healthcare workers, educators, students, [and military] veterans," were calling on Congress to pass an Israeli "arms embargo now" and to fund education, healthcare, and housing – "not genocide" in Gaza.

The protesters also aimed to press Senators to support six joint resolutions of disapproval introduced by Vermont socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders in September and coming up for a floor vote today. The resolutions target US complicity in Israeli war crimes and would bar the further sale of tank rounds and other weapons that have been repeatedly used against Palestinian civilians.

"The United States government is currently in violation of the law, and every member of the US Senate who believes in the rule of law should vote for these resolutions," Sanders said at a press conference yesterday, calling the legal facts "cut and dry." He was joined by Democratic Sens. Peter Welch of Vermont, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.

The resolutions are likely to fail when voting time comes. "But symbolism has meaning," J Street president Jeremy Ben-Ami writes. "History will not be kind to those who step back when the moment demands a clear and powerful statement of disapproval of how this war has been conducted and of horror at the death, destruction and humanitarian disaster that has been created."

Meanwhile in Gaza, "organized gangs are stealing much of the aid Israel allows into the enclave, operating freely in areas controlled by the Israeli military," the Washington Post reports. The gangs, run by local crime families, are said to be rivals of Hamas and have clashed with that group; the United Nations "concluded last month that the gangs 'may be benefiting from a passive if not active benevolence' or 'protection' from the Israel Defense Forces."

House GOP Priority: Banning Trans Rep. Sarah McBride from Capitol Bathrooms

After promising to "treat all persons with dignity and respect," Budding Theocrat House Speaker Mike Johnson yesterday rushed to clarify that he didn't mean transgender persons. Johnson signaled support for a resolution by South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace to block the first openly trans member of Congress, Delaware Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride, from women's restrooms at the Capitol. The Associated Press reports:

"'This is a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing,' McBride said. 'We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars.'
"Rep. Katherine Clark, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, quipped that House Republicans are already 'off to a great start.'
"'What are they talking about there, on day one, is where one member out of 435 is going, where she is going to use the bathroom?' the Massachusetts lawmaker said during a press conference Tuesday. 'That is their focus?'"

Even if Mace's resolution is adopted this year, before McBride's swearing-in, it will have to be reintroduced and passed next year to be in effect for the next Congress, according to the Washington Post.

73 percent

That's how many Philadelphia precincts saw a lower voter turnout this year as compared to the 2020 general election, NBC News reports. The same trend held true in Detroit and Milwaukee, suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign underperformed by failing to inspire the Democratic Party's base to turn out. That said, Donald Trump's popular vote lead is shrinking across the US as Western states complete their vote counts, the Nation reports, belying his claim of having won "an unprecedented and powerful mandate."

PARTING WORDS

"When I came to this [trial] and gave up anonymity, my children were ashamed to have the name Pelicot. But I have grandchildren who are called Pelicot. I want them not to be ashamed to have the name. I want them to be proud of their grandmother. I want people to remember Madame Pelicot, not Monsieur Pelicot."

-- Gisèle Pelicot, responding to a question from the defense counsel for her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, yesterday at his trial in Avignon, France. Over a decade, Dominique drugged Gisèle and invited dozens of men to rape her in a shocking, high-profile case that's forcing a conversation about changing "the macho, patriarchal society that trivializes rape," as she put it in her closing statement.
