Hurricane Milton Aftermath: DeSantis Attacks Climate Science as GOP Rejects Boost to FEMA Aid

We've told you all about how top Republicans have sowed chaos by spreading insane lies about this year's ominous hurricane season, fueled by warming seas resulting from fossil fuel emissions. But Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis yesterday called the science of climate change a conspiracy theory, dismissing this week's terrifying Hurricane Milton as ordinary "tropical weather" while storm survivors picked through the rubble of their flattened homes. Although FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said yesterday that Floridians luckily avoided "the extreme impacts of the worst case scenario that we prepared for," the damage was extensive: at least 16 dead across the state, according to the Tampa Bay Times, an estimated 150 homes destroyed by dozens of tornadoes, and more than 3 million utility customers without power a day after Milton made landfall. Insurers are on the hook for an estimated $50 billion in damage, which will lead to higher premiums next year. Meanwhile in Washington, DC, President Joe Biden called on Congress to reconvene to fund FEMA disaster relief, but Budding Theocrat House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans "insist the agency can manage just fine."

Israeli Forces Shoot UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon, Kill 22 in Beirut Airstrikes

The Israel Defense Forces claim they told United Nations peacekeepers to move and take cover before firing on their positions and civilian areas in southern Lebanon yesterday. The UN says the Israeli attacks on three seperate positions, including tank fire at an observation tower at their main headquarters, injured two peacekeepers. "Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701," the UN Interim Force in Lebanon said in a statement. Separately, "Israeli airstrikes on central Beirut Thursday left two neighborhoods smoldering, killing 22 people and wounding dozens," the Associated Press reports. The air raid targeted two residential buildings, bringing one down entirely. Meanwhile in Gaza, the humanitarian situation has not improved; UN investigators yesterday accused Israel of "committing war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination with relentless and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities."

SOME NUMBER

$2,400

That's how much South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace has been padding her salary every month through an expense reimbursement program for members of Congress that relies on the honor system and requires no receipts. Last year more than two dozen members took home at least $30,000 on top of their $174,000 salaries through the program, which was created in 2022, per the Washington Post; seven of the top 10 beneficiaries are Republicans. Some are claiming thousands of dollars in food expenses although free food is abundant on Capitol Hill.

PARTING WORDS

"We hear the word 'Victory' less and less, and 'Negotiations' more and more. ... The Victory Plan is now Biden's responsibility, and we wash our hands of it. The fortress city of Vuhledar turned out not to be such a strategic point after all, and we've already grown accustomed to losing a village every day."

-- Oleh Sentsov, a Ukrainian filmmaker serving in the military, in a Facebook post this week about the grim state of the war effort. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte yesterday to discuss his "Victory Plan," the details of which are not public; a scheduled summit in Germany this weekend including President Joe Biden was postponed on account of Hurricane Milton. Although allied diplomats "have sensed that Zelenskyy has become more open to beginning negotiations with Russia" despite Ukraine's weakened position, he yesterday denied a ceasefire was under discussion, calling such speculation Russian disinformation.
