Biden Offers Pathway to Citizenship to Some Spouses of US Citizens

President Joe Biden can't seem to decide whether he's running to the right of Donald Trump on immigration, or upholding the welcoming tradition symbolized, as he said yesterday at the White House, by the Statue of Liberty. "We can both secure the border and provide legal pathways to citizenship," Biden said, announcing a series of new policies that will protect more than 500,000 immigrants with close family ties to US citizens from deportation. Applications for the expanded "parole in place" program should open by the end of this summer. Politico reports that Biden and his advisers are trying to lure Donald Trump "into a very specific debate" about immigration that reminds Americans of the horrors of his family separation policy. To me it seems like yet another example of centrist Democrats overcomplicating an issue for fear of making a bold and straightforward policy statement. Meanwhile in Florida, a Customs and Border Patrol officer pleaded guilty to stealing $18,700 in cash from 18 arriving international passengers at Naples Airport. Welcome to America!

Trump 'Spiritual Adviser' Resigns from Texas Megachurch After Accusation of Child Sex Abuse

Robert Morris founded the massive and politically active Gateway Church in the Dallas suburb of Southlake, Texas, in 2000. In 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump appointed Morris to his "evangelical executive advisory board," and he continued to advise Trump in the White House. Morris hosted Trump during a visit to Dallas in 2020; Trump called him "great people." But now Trump's flunkies claim Morris has nothing to do with Trump's campaign. Gateway Church's "board of elders" announced that they'd accepted Morris's resignation yesterday, several days after a 54-year-old Oklahoma woman alleged that the pastor had sexually abused her when she was 12 years old. Sounds about right. Meanwhile in Washington, DC, the bipartisan House Ethics Committee announced that it has expanded its investigation into another Trump ally, creepy Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz. The allegations against him, per Politico, include "sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, accepting improper gifts and obstructing investigations into his conduct."
