THE BIG NEWS

Dockworkers' Union Wins Wage Hike, Suspends Strike

The International Longshoremen's Association kicked off a strike on Tuesday that shut down East Coast ports the minute its 45,000 members walked off the job.

"We're not playing around," one union vice president told the Washington Post. "If we say we're going out, we're going out."

Yesterday, they essentially declared victory, suspending the strike and announcing a tentative deal with port and shipping bosses to increase wages by 62 percent, from $39 up to $63 per hour at the top of the pay scale.

Senior Biden administration officials, including Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su, helped broker the deal. Business interests and Republicans were pressuring President Joe Biden to invoke the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act to break the strike and force the longshoremen back to work. He refused, and called the labor movement's cause legitimate. Vice President Kamala Harris, on the campaign trail, echoed the sentiment.

"Collective bargaining works, and it is critical to building a stronger economy from the middle out and the bottom up," Biden said yesterday after the union announced its deal with the US Maritime Alliance.

The union's fight isn't over. The tentative deal doesn't resolve the problem of increasing automation in the shipping industry. And the strike has only been suspended until Jan. 15 – when the state of negotiations will be the president-elect's headache.

That's how much Pahrump, Nevada Justice of the Peace Michele Fiore, a Republican former lawmaker and Las Vegas city councilor, raised through a charity and her political action committee to build a statue honoring a police officer who was shot and killed on the job. But instead of funding the statue, state prosecutors say, Fiore "spent the donations on rent, plastic surgery and payments on her daughter's wedding." A jury yesterday found her guilty on federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges.
