THE BIG NEWS
Detroit Police Arrest 8-months Pregnant Woman Off False Facial Recognition Match
Detroit police arrested Porcha Woodruff in front of her children and fiancé in February while she was 8-months pregnant. Facial recognition technology used by the police incorrectly identified her as a suspect involved in a robbery, per the New York Times.
She's not the only one. At least six people say they were wrongfully arrested after being falsely identified by facial recognition software – three by Detroit police alone, and all of them Black. Facial recognition technology has been shown to have higher error rates for people of color; one study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology found that Black and Asian faces were 10 to 100 times more likely to receive false matches than White faces.
Detroit police could have ruled out Woodruff's involvement in the robbery with a smidge of common sense. The suspect in the robbery had sexual intercourse, twice, with her victim before taking him to an accomplice, who robbed him at gun point. The victim did not say the suspect was pregnant, a condition one might notice of a sexual partner. Despite this, it took a month for the police department to dismiss the case.
In 2020, Detroit police falsely identified Robert Williams as a burglary suspect using DataWorks Plus. The same software vendor that mistakenly identified Woodruff. Dumb police and bad technology are a dangerous mix.

Half of Sudan's Population Food Insecure as Internal Conflict Blocks Aid
Twenty-four million people, half of Sudan's population, are in need of food and other humanitarian aid, according to statements from United Nations officials reported by the Associated Press. Relief efforts have reached 2.5 million, but most have not received relief due lack of funding and the four-months-long armed conflict between rival military factions. Eighteen aid workers have been killed on mission in Sudan in since the start of fighting April. In addition, ethnic violence has also returned to the Darfur region, where government-allied militias carried out ethnic cleansing and brutal acts of sexual violence about two decades ago. Eden Worsornu, the director of the U.N.'s humanitarian arm, told AP that the conditions in Darfur are "worse than 2004."
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Sentenced with 3 Years in Prison, Military Seeks to Quash His Influence
Saturday, former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan was sentenced to three years in a high-security prison for selling state gifts from foreign dignitaries, per the Washington Post. Many suspect the conviction is just the climax of the broader effort by the powerful Pakistani military to sideline Khan and his party, PTI, from upcoming elections this year (or next, depending on how long the government delays them). Ten's of thousands violently protested Khan's house arrest, but France 24 reports that a similar movement has, thus far, not taken shape after Khan's conviction. Khan was ousted as Prime Minister in 2018 after a vote of no confidence, but his party has been making a comeback. The announcement of Khan's arrest came a day before a deadly train derailment near Karachi, which killed at least 30 and injured 100, per the BBC.
