THE BIG NEWS

Trump, Still Looking for Lawyers, Pleads Not Guilty

Without being handcuffed, Donald Trump was arrested and booked at a federal courthouse in Miami at 2pm local time yesterday. Trump's Diet Coke fetcher and indicted co-conspirator in the stolen documents case, Walt Nauta, was along for the ride. No cameras were allowed. Sad!

Trump pleaded not guilty on all 37 counts; Nauta entered no plea and requested more time to find a lawyer. Trump was represented by Todd Blanche, a former federal prosecutor. Even now the composition of his defense team, and their strategy, remains a work in progress. Federal magistrate judge Jonathan Goodman presided over the arraignment, though Trump appointee Aileen Cannon will still oversee the trial. Goodman placed no travel restrictions on Trump and allowed him to remain in communication with Nauta.

Ahead of Trump's arraignment, Miami officials said they were preparing for crowds of between 5,000 and 50,000 people. Instead, mere dozens, perhaps hundreds, turned up for Trump. One Florida GOP group that planned to send four busloads of Trump fans to the courthouse ended up chartering only two. It was a "small but colorful" bunch: A white man in a "Blacks for Trump" T-shirt screamed at Republican Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez about the Satanic Illuminati. Another "man held up a real pig's head on a stake, a U.S. flag emerging from its mouth." Failed GOP congressional candidate Laura Loomer, a career Islamophobe perhaps best known for chaining herself to Twitter's headquarters, was there looking for attention. Trump's call for protest was a total bust.

After his court appearance, Trump flew to his golf club in Bedminster, NJ, to raise money and whine about his problems.

"He's scared sh*tless," says John Kelly, Trump's former White House chief of staff.

In related news, New York Attorney General Tish James said she'd received death threats due to her civil fraud investigation of Trump. "I will not be paralyzed by fear," she said. "I'm from Brooklyn."

House Democrats Make Gun Control Push

Ten people were injured, three of them critically, in a shooting in Denver where Nuggets fans were celebrating their NBA championship. Meanwhile on Capitol Hill, House Democrats are set to make another push for an assault weapons ban as well as increased background checks for gun buyers, the Washington Post reports. In coordination with leadership, Reps. Lucy McBath of Georgia, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Mike Thompson of California used a procedural move yesterday to bypass Republican objections and advance their bills. (McBath lost her teen son to gun violence in 2012.) The House is back in business after the right flank of the House GOP temporarily lifted their blockade; Freedom Caucus members are still seeking a power-sharing deal with the stunningly useless Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

SOME NUMBER

8.7 percent

That's how much rents rose across America in May as compared to last year, according to the latest Labor Department figures. The silver lining, as the New York Times reports, is that rents have risen more slowly over the last three months than at any time since the beginning of 2022, in keeping with the general trend of cooling inflation.
