Biden Warned of Russian Escalation as Zelenskyy Meets with Harris and Trump

As we've told you in recent weeks, Ukraine has been lobbying the US and European allies to allow the use of long-range missiles they have supplied to strike military targets deep inside Russia. Previous reports suggested that President Joe Biden was likely to approve that request despite Aspiring Tsar Vladimir Putin's nuclear threats. But the New York Times reports that Biden's advisers and US intelligence agencies are urging caution, and "believe that Russia is likely to retaliate with greater force against the United States and its coalition partners, possibly with lethal attacks, if they agree to give the Ukrainians permission" to deploy the missiles. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday and denounced her Republican rival Donald Trump's plan to hand chunks of Ukraine to Putin on a silver platter. "They are not proposals for peace," Harris says. "Instead they are proposals for surrender." Zelenskyy is due to meet with the deranged felon this morning at Trump Tower. Speaking of proposals for surrender, a top aide to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán this week criticized Zelenskyy for defending his country and said that if Russia invaded Hungary, his government would roll over. Meanwhile in Austria, a racist far-right pro-Putin party is expected to gain ground in elections on Sunday.

That's how many months in prison a Hong Kong court handed down as a sentence yesterday to Chung Pui-kuen, top editor at the defunct online publication Stand News, over its coverage of the big 2019 protests. Another editor, Patrick Lam, received a shorter sentence and was released from custody, in part due to poor health. Reporters Without Borders says the two journalists were "serving the public's interest by covering social and political issues in Hong Kong and should never have been detained, let alone sentenced to prison."
