Netanyahu Claims It's 'the Beginning of the End' of Gaza Bloodshed - The Friday AM Quickie 10/18/24

King Charles is going on his first state visit to Australia, which is apparently prompting many Aussies to ask why they still have a king who lives in a faraway country and who nobody really likes. Fair dinkum. (Did I use that right?) Jacob's back Monday! - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

What Does Killing of Hamas Leader Mean for Gaza?

The Israeli military yesterday claimed to have killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, "a chief architect" of last year's Oct. 7 attack. "Troops appeared to have run across him unknowingly in a battle, only to discover afterwards that a body in the rubble was Israel's most-wanted man," the Associated Press reports. The White House immediately responded by suggesting Israel can now declare victory and scale back its expanding regional war.

"This moment gives us an opportunity to finally end the war in Gaza," Vice President Kamala Harris said during a campaign stop in Wisconsin. President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told reporters that Sinwar's death should "present an opportunity to find a way forward that gets the hostages home, brings the war to an end, brings us to a 'day after.'" Biden himself, after congratulating Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the killing, called Sinwar an "insurmountable obstacle" to peace and told reporters that "it's time for this war to end... So that's what we're ready to do."

But is that what Netanyahu wants? In a recorded message to Israelis yesterday, the far-right leader said "the task before us is not yet complete... While this is not the end of the war in Gaza, it is the beginning of the end... [This war] can end if Hamas lays down its arms and returns our hostages."

But regional experts tell the Washington Post that Sinwar's killing "may have created new obstacles" to peace, including "whether there is a viable replacement as Hamas leader who is ready and able to negotiate a cease-fire." And one old obstacle remains: the Israeli leadership. "It all goes down to Israel and whether Netanyahu is ready for a deal now or not," one Arab official tells the Post. "Honestly, I cannot read this guy anymore. ... I've stopped guessing what he's going to do; I've been wrong every time." US officials also privately acknowledge, per Politico, that "Netanyahu's general refusal to keep his word to Biden" will no doubt continue to pose a problem. But he now has one less excuse for boundless war.

"Now that Sinwar has evidently been killed, there is zero justification for doing anything other than all means possible and necessary to get the hostages home," Jonathan Dekel-Chen, father of hostage Sagui Dekel-Chen, tells NBC News.
