New York police yesterday released undated surveillance images of a "person of interest" in the Wednesday morning assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on his way into an investor meeting in Manhattan. According to the New York Times, a water bottle found at the scene "proved to be a dead end" when tested for DNA and fingerprints. Investigators believe the killer traveled by bus from Atlanta to New York, where he checked in to a hostel using a fake ID. As the manhunt continues into a third day, health insurance companies are in full panic mode, scrubbing executives' names from their websites, and hiring private personal security for C-suite officers and board members. While devoting blanket coverage to the story, mainstream news sources are professing shock and bafflement at the killer's fast attainment of "folk hero" status and the outpouring of contempt for health insurers that place profit over the lives of patients; the Times diplomatically suggests the "dark commentary" reflects "the anger and frustration over the state of health care in America."
