More Cabinet Firings Could Follow Bondi – The Friday AM Quickie 4/3/26

I guess it's good that consumer backlash caused the Hershey corporation to supposedly stop using fake chocolate, but I have a better idea: the government simply shouldn't allow companies to call something chocolate that isn't. Problem solved. I'm out, Whitney's back Monday. - Corey

THE BIG NEWS

Trump Fires His Attorney General Because She Didn't Lock Up Enough of His Opponents

As expected, Donald Trump fired brown-nosing Attorney General Pam Bondi yesterday, in what could be the first of a series of cabinet reshuffles. True to form, Trump continues to blame subordinates for problems of his own making.

Bondi has been replaced, for now, with another former personal attorney of Trump's, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Trump is expected to nominate Lee Zeldin, currently director of the Environmental Protection Agency, as Bondi's permanent replacement. According to the Washington Post, other possible candidates include Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee; Harmeet Dhillon, who's been busy gutting the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division; and Jeanine Pirro, the "not drunk" former Fox News host-turned-US attorney for Washington, DC, who has tried and repeatedly failed to prosecute Trump's enemies.

It was Trump's unquenchable thirst for vengeance that was Bondi's ultimate downfall, news reports suggest. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump was "incensed that she had not successfully prosecuted a number of his political enemies." In particular, the New York Times reports, Trump was angry that Bondi hadn't put New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI director James Comey in prison as revenge for investigating Trump's crimes. Also, per Politico, "the prosecution of several congressional Democrats who urged the military to disobey illegal orders, charges against his longtime nemesis Sen. Adam Schiff and pardoned members of the Jan. 6 committee — have stalled or failed to get past the starting line" under Bondi.

Bondi may be gone from the Department of Justice, but she could still be called to testify on the botched and incomplete release of the Department's files on the late elite sex trafficker and Trump pal Jeffrey Epstein. Her mishandling of the public release of those files also reportedly frustrated Trump. Presumably he didn't care that survivors' names were mistakenly made public, but was rather mad that some of the released files implicated him in Epstein's abuse network.

It must be said, Bondi's so-called failures to carry out Trump's priorities are a good thing. Attorneys General are supposed to uphold the law and democratic principles, not seek to imprison critics of the president and cover up his crimes. "No one can be loyal enough. No one can punish Trump’s enemies fast enough," Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert, who testified against Bondi’s confirmation, said yesterday, per HuffPost. "Pam Bondi took the DOJ in a lawless, non-independent, shameful direction, and the institution of justice has suffered as a result." We can only hope that Trump's next Attorney General is as incompetent as his last one.

War on Iran: Children Recruited to Defend Against US Ground Invasion

Trump's Führerbunker Is Under Construction

The National Capital Planning Commission, a group stacked with Donald Trump's appointees, yesterday signed off on Trump's plans for a ginormous White House ballroom over the rubble of the demolished East Wing. The bureaucratic step doesn't change a judge's ruling this week that says Congress must approve for the project, but construction is likely to continue regardless. What may be more interesting, though, is what's happening underground.

The New York Times reports that work crews have torn out the subsurface World War II-era Presidential Emergency Operations Center as the White House plans for a much larger underground bunker for Trump and future presidents. Trump can't stop bragging about the secure facility, which he says will have "have biodefense all over" plus bomb shelters, secure telecommunications, and a hospital. How nice for him and Dr. Strangelove.

SOME NUMBER

43 percent

That's the share of heavy social media users -- defined as those who spend five or more hours a day on the apps -- who disagree with the statement that democracy is the best form of government, according to a new Gallup poll. The figure is only 27 percent among those who spend an hour or less on social media. Heavy social media users are also more likely to believe that the government should dictate the news.

"A certain kind of person is opting into spending a lot of time on social media, and they may be people who are more disaffected to start with," Jaime Settle, an associate professor of government at the College of William & Mary, tells the Washington Post.

PARTING WORDS

"I was just talking to the president."

-- Golf legend Tiger Woods, speaking to a Martin County, Florida Sheriff’s Deputy after crashing his Land Rover late last month, as shown in newly released body camera footage. Woods is a "very close friend of" Donald Trump and is dating Vanessa Trump, who was formerly married to Don Jr. The golfer failed a field sobriety test but told police he was not drunk, but rather on prescription medication. Trump has said he spoke to Woods after the arrest but the White House is declining comment on whether the two men spoke during the arrest.
