House GOP Kills Resolution to Stop Trump from Attacking Venezuela Again

For the third time, House Republicans voted against an effort to stop Donald Trump from waging war in Latin America without Congressional approval. Yesterday's bipartisan resolution, sponsored by GOP Rep. Thomas Massie and Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro, won votes from every Democrat as well as one more Republican, Rep. Don Bacon. Republicans argued that "we are not at war with Venezuela," but, as Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks observed, per the New York Times, "there is still a US aircraft carrier parked in the Caribbean" and "tens of thousands of young American men and women remain on standby."

Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez, who was Nicolás Maduro's vice president, secretly "pledged to cooperate" with the US plan to abduct Maduro. "Delcy was communicating 'Maduro needs to go,'" one American source says. Another says "she said, 'I'll work with whatever is the aftermath.'" Qatar – where Rodríguez, like Trump, has friends – was the go-between.

Trump Has Only Concepts of a Deal for Greenland

HuffPost reports that the "framework" of a deal giving the United States a greater say in Greenland's future, touted by Donald Trump this week at the Davos conference, "appears to exist only in his head." NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who met with Trump one-on-one prior to his announcement, says Greenland never came up in their conversations. Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, likewise says she hasn't concluded any negotiations over the Danish colony with Trump. According to the New York Times, there are several proposals on the table, all of which "stop short" of putting Greenland under US control, but "many details have yet to be finalized." Politico says the proposals are "remarkably similar to an agreement that already exists."

So there you have it: Trump torched the US relationship with its European allies for precisely nothing. Great job, sir!

That's how many infants from the West African country of Guinea-Bissau were to be enrolled in a profoundly messed-up hepatitis B vaccine study funded by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the New York Times reports. Half of the infants in the study were to remain unvaccinated, even though the World Health Organization remands that vaccine be administered at birth. The Guinea-Bissau government suspended the study this week. Meanwhile, the Trump regime finalized the US withdrawal from the WHO, though it still owes the agency more than $130 million.
