Black People Across US Get Pro-Trump Texts Saying They Will Be Enslaved; FBI Investigating

Black people in at least a dozen states and the District of Columbia, from New York to California, Ohio to Alabama, received racist and menacing anonymous text messages after Election Day. "Greetings, you have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Be ready at 1:00 pm SHARP with your belongings. Our Executive Slaves will come get you in a Brown Van, be prepared to be searched down once you've enter the plantation. You are in Plantation Group C. Good day," reads one of the messages reviewed by Vibe magazine. Some of the texts claimed to come from the "Trump & Vance Administration," though the campaign denies having anything to do with them. Distressingly, some of the texts called the recipients by name. CNN reports that the sender frequently replied when students who received them responded. It's unclear how many people received the messages. The Associated Press reports that the FBI, the Justice Dpeartment, and the Federal Communications Commission are investigating, along with state law enforcement agencies. A messaging service that allows people to obtain untraceable burner numbers, TextNow, tells NBC News it "acted quickly" to shut down the harassment on its service. NAACP President Derrick Johnson calls the threats "deeply disturbing" and "not normal. And we refuse to let them be normalized."
