The Hashtag Resistance Is Dead
In Donald Trump's first term, hopes were high among some Democrats that American institutions would rise up to the threat of fascism, sober professionals would do their jobs, and Trump would be held legally accountable for his official crime spree. These liberals and centrists (mostly) posted furiously under the social media hashtag "#resistance."
This bunch -- which includes more than a few former Republicans -- hasn't been so vocal in Trump's second term as it's become all too clear that American institutions aren't fit for purpose and democracy gave way to an authoritarian regime. Now Politico reports that #resistance Democrats have been defeated in one party primary after another across the country, with centrist Alexander Vindman's loss to democratic socialist Angie Nixon in Florida being the headliner.
It doesn't help that some #resistance liberals have completely lost the plot, and are more concerned these days about leftists like Twitch streamer Hasan Piker influencing the Democratic Party than they are about the many ongoing crimes of the Trump regime.
As if the election returns weren't proof enough, a #resistance icon, former Trump fixer Michael Cohen, used his New York radio show yesterday to patch things up with his estranged former boss. "I respect the fact that you recanted everything you said," Trump told Cohen after calling in to the show. "This is the Donald Trump that I remember," Cohen gushed. And so another worm turns.
While Trump and his cohort certainly need to be held accountable, that day will come only after the kind of political revolution that leftists like Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders have been talking about – not before. Institutions are subordinate to politics, not the other way around. Misunderstanding this was the fundamental error of the hasthag resistance – that and the kind of gullibility that led them to embrace charlatans like Cohen.

Progressive Aisha Wahab Wins California Special Election
California state Sen. Aisha Wahab will be the first Afghan American to join Congress after winning a special election to finish out disgraced Rep. Eric Swalwell's term. Wahab won 53 percent of the vote, well ahead of her closest competitor, centrist transit official Melissa Hernandez, who benefited from more than $6.3 million in AIPAC funding, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "This victory belongs to the voters who made clear that our district cannot be bought," Wahab, a progressive backed by both the state Democratic Party and Our Revolution, said, describing her race as "one of the ugliest, most expensive elections we've ever seen."
Meanwhile, federal agents this week detained former Rep. Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport, seized his electronic devices, and raided his Washington, DC home, the Los Angeles Times reports. He faces an investigation due to multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, the Associated Press reports. One woman Swalwell "hooked up" with (in his words) was a suspected Chinese spy, and the FBI queried his former staff about her in interviews earlier this year, according to the Washington Post.
Hate Comes to Dearborn
Police arrested 22 people Tuesday night in Dearborn, Michigan, during what the Detroit News calls "a heated protest" triggered by fascist streamer Jake Lang, who "has visited the city multiple times as part of what he calls a Christian 'crusade.'" More to the point, it's a prolonged hate rally, one with clear links to mainstream Republican figures. According to the Michigan Advance,
"Lang organized the protest with the help of Detroit Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, a supporter of President Donald Trump who was criticized for attempting to enrich himself through a cryptocurrency scheme after speaking at Trump's second inauguration. Sewell is also a member of the Faith Coalition Leadership Team of Republican US Senate nominee Mike Rogers, who faces Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim, in November's election."
The New York Times relates a heartbreaking anecdote from Dearborn's mayor, Abdullah Hammoud, who says a small boy approached him this week and "asked if the quote-unquote crusaders were going to kill him." Lang's racist followers aim to "to terrorize a whole faith community," Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib says. "Dearborn is a beautifully diverse place, home to a vibrant, loving Muslim community, and our families do not deserve to be subjected to such hate and bigotry."
