THE BIG NEWS

If you caught yesterday's MR, you know that Donald Trump and unelected Nazi-saluting oligarch Elon Musk are already wreaking havoc on the Social Security system, causing repeated website crashes and chaos in suddenly understaffed offices, and disrupting the lives of millions of elderly and disabled beneficiaries. It's going to get worse if the Republicans get their way, and they know it, which is why they keep lying about their plans to gut the agency. The Washington Post reports:

"Frank Bisignano, President Donald Trump's nominee to run the Social Security Administration, testified under oath at his confirmation hearing Tuesday that he has had no contact with the [bogus] Elon Musk cost-cutting team that is directing a major downsizing of the agency.

"But Sen. Ron Wyden (Oregon), the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, said the claim is 'not true,' citing an account the senator said he received from a senior Social Security official who recently left the agency. The former official — whose detailed statement was shared with The Washington Post — described 'numerous contacts Mr. Bisignano made with the agency since his nomination,' including 'frequent' conversations with senior executives.

While some outlets are framing Bisignano's brazen lie as a mere accusation from a Democratic Senator, the Post did its homework and confirmed the Wyden whistleblower's account with two other people. Those sources make it clear that before he's even confirmed to head the agency, Bisignano has been helping Musk's cronies take it apart from the inside.

Bisignano, a former Wall Street executive, also told Senators yesterday that "I've never thought about privatizing" Social Security. But if he's already a demonstrated liar on these matters, why should anyone believe that?

Vitamin A does not prevent measles, unlike the standard two-dose course of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, which is 97 percent effective.

Kevin Griffis, who was head of communications at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention until last week, writes in the Washington Post that Kennedy's mishandling of the measles outbreak inspired him to quit. Meanwhile, Kennedy's Health and Human Services department has hired David Geier, an antivaxxer who was previously disciplined for practicing medicine without a license, to conduct a study of an unsupported link between vaccines and autism. HHS is also reportedly clawing back $11.4 billion in pandemic funding to state and county health departments, saying the agency "will no longer waste billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a non-existent pandemic that Americans moved on from years ago." Yikes.
